View Full Version : I finally reached my first 100K$

I finally reached my first 100K$ profit in Limit Texas Holdem.

It tooks 7 months of learning and playing from 0.5/1 to 15/30 limits of SH and full games with help of my first deposit of 100$. 4 months ago i quited my regular job (salaries here in Moscow aren't high) and start to play for living as well as begin to read and post in 2+2 forums, most of the time - SH-forums. I'm still running good after more than 200K hands making a bit more than 3BB/100. Last month i made more than 30K$ (it's a record!).There were many events in this time. My Black Jack school and playing against Moscow casinos with very high variance and very slight EV helps me to come through all damages online TH tryed to cause to me. Sometimes i felt depressed seeing my EV falling, facing 1-1.5 weeks of "around zero" play mixed by some downstreaks of 100 and sometimes 150BB down. Sometimes i felt very happy when i was up more than 700BB in a bit less than 20K hands. But anyway all the time i try to understand deeper concepts of a game (which and now i don't understand fully) and do some researching with help of 2+2 posters.

Now i'm example of succesfull online gambler. I'm up very high in money (for Moscow) comparing to my friends (i start feel even some jealousy), who are asking many questions to me and usually get the answers. Some of them wanted to start some day their gamble career. So prepare for *russian* invasion to poker in a couple of years /images/graemlins/grin.gif

What is this post about? Actually this post 'bout graces. I want to thank all the posters of 2+2 SH forums for arguing and advicing. Especially i want to thank some regular posters, who opened my eyes not once, forcing me to understand more in poker. Their names are Shneids, Nate the Great, Guido, Naphand, Stripsqueez, El Diablo. Guys, if destiny leads any of you to Moscow, - i invite you to a dinner and the expenses are mine. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Congrats dude. I hope i'm next on the list. I know things are pretty bad economically in Russia compared to the US, but what's does an average person make per year do you know? Making more than 100k in a year is very good here where the economy is doing reasonably well, I can't even imagine what it's like there.

If you make 900-1100$/month you feel good. Making 1.5K/month in Moscow is much above average. If you earn 3K$ than you're obviously one of higher manager in a big company. But more than 50% of people are in 300-600$/month range.

Also it's well known that Moscow is one of the most expensive city in a world, which stands in a row with New York, Tokio and London.

And it's just Moscow, if you see some other regions of Russia you will see that 50-200$/month is pretty common.

One man's house style is another's no-no.

But let me ask this. Suppose you have to write some advertising copy for a range of stripy pyjamas. They are available in three stripy flavours:

- black and white
- green and yellow
- claret and blue.

You want to say that these beautiful items of nighttime attire are available "black and white, green and yellow, and claret and blue," but your style book won't let you put the comma there...

What do you write?

Guy.

naphand

Green and Yellow, for the days when you have skin problems.
Claret and Blue, for those haemorrhoid days.
All three can be purchased together at a much reduced price of $695.00"

How hard is that? No-one ever said descriptions have to come in sentences... /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Taking your experienced advice into consideration, I did some research and discovered a lucrative black market of sinful imports flowing into my beloved country from the UK. Being the upstanding citizen that I am, I intensified my research and after careful scrutinization of my facts and sources, reported the findings to Homeland Security in the hopes that they would initiate a ban on these scandalous products. They correctly concluded that this illegal traffic presents a clear and present danger to the national security of our nation, and in fact determined that it is an even greater threat than I originially calculated. Therefore, economic sanctions will be skipped and bombing is set to commence immediately. Troops will be provided for occupation after the Congress ratifies this measure at their next meeting. I have the utmost confidence that this scandalous assault on my country will be rectified in a timely manner with minimum risk to American soldiers. Furthermore, I feel that a war against such sinful, illegal commerce will only heighten the moral highground that America holds. Naphand, thank you very much for bringing this issue to my attention; I included your name in my reports and am positive that American special forces will contact you for on-the-ground intelligence once the invasion begins.

PS Here's my favorite Britain-America joke for you:

An American man is checking into a British hotel and asks the concierge where he can find the elevator. The concierge responds, "Oh, you mean the lift. It's just around the corner here, sir." The American replies, "No, I mean the elevator." To which the British man returns, "We call it a 'lift' over here, sir." Insulted, the American barks back, "We invented the damn thing, and it's called an elevator." Then the concierge says, "Yes, but we invented the bloody language."

I make them up as I go along, based on a theme. If I borrow three words from someone else, it does not make the post unoriginal. The punch-line may be old, but the lead-in is new enough; I am not repeating what I heard from someone else.

The clue was in the separation of my lead and the cheese.

While the American-British joke isn't particularly funny it does illustrate the two stereotypes well enough; Americans loud, uncompromising and arrogant, British pompous and supercilious. The Reaganesque "we begin bombing in 2 minutes" is not only unoriginal in content and style, it is also in incredibly poor taste considering what is happening right now. But then, you are the nation that invented the check-suit and the Big Mac... /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Who said anything about positive traits?

Rory Bremner a well-known stand up comedian in UK, does a lot of research into the characters he portrays. He does the best Clinton impersonation I have ever seen. One particularly brilliant sketch was between "Clinton" and a reporter at the White House...

Reporter:
"What about relations with China?"
Clinton (pauses to recall):
"Ah don't believe Ah know her..."

now THAT was funny (altough it has to be said the mannerisms and comic timing added hugely to its hilarity).

Tee-hee. This says a lot about the sad state of beer in your country. I used to work for Bass as a brewer and projects manager. There are a lot of micro-breweries in the USA that I am hearing good things about, obviously there are distribution difficulties, but you should check them out if you can. A lot have been started by Brits or USA natives who came over here and discovered what beer was meant to be like, and went home to a market where bland acceptability is the norm.

Incidentally have you ever tried the original Budweiser Budvar (from the Czech Republic)? I believe you copied it (but left out the flavour and most of the alcohol).

PS
Are we off topic yet?

Yes, large brewery American beer is basically alcoholic water, but three are lots of good micro-brews. One of my favorites, the Great Lakes Brewing Co., is located right here in Cleveland. My favorite micro-brew is probably Victory Golden Monkey, though. It's a high-alcohol wheat beer from Pittsburgh (the only good thing to ever come out of that city). Bell's makes some good beers as well, but off the top of my head that's all I can think of. If you PM me your address I'd be glad to ship you some good brews. As to Budvar-nope, never had it. Is it worth the effort to find?

Scott

I cannot think of a single beer that travels well, though I appreciate your offer. My palate for new beer became jaded quite some time ago after I passed the 1,000 mark. Though I did have some Chimay Blue Cap once (in Scotland) that was truly spectacular (brewed by Trappist Monks in Belguim). In fact, the lambic beer that comes out of Belgium is something else, though only as an oddity (the peach-beer especially).

Incidentally, the (Chimay) Trappist monks have 3 different strength brews. The Blue Cap is 9% by vol. and is used for special celebrations. The Red Cap is only 7% by vol. and, apparently, is taken with breakfast. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif The White Cap is 8% by vol. and is reserved for Lent and other periods of fasting, the Monk's allowance being restricted to 1 gallon per day during fasting (yes, on an empty belly).

Ever though about taking up orders?

Scotch78
11-13-2004, 07:44 AM

Just moved to Ireland from the States. Why the hell can't I get any British beers here? The selection sucks. Bass is all I can find, and it's extremely mediocre. Guinness is good as far as Irish beers go, but vastly overrated, as Samuel Smith makes 2 better stouts, the Oatmeal and the Imperial. And Fullers, why can I get their beers in the USA but not in Ireland? Crap, I'm so frustrated. I thought I'd find McEwans, Samuel Smith, Fullers, etc... at any off-license. No such luck.

Actually had a Budvar last night at a pub. Bottled. Eh, OK. I think Pilsner Urquell and Staropramen are better Pils beers. Some would argue. By the way, Budvar is sold as Czechvar in the States.

Can't wait to travel to Scotland and England and try all the beers on tap.

naphand
11-14-2004, 01:09 PM
The beer in Scotland is not bad. It is sold according to the old duty system: 70/- (70-shilling), 80/- (ubiquitously referred to as "heavy") and 90/- (which is very strong). You need to have these on tap as the canned versions are not great. Tennents lager (I worked for them for 2 years) used to be something special, but I don't think it is any more. However, beer is nothing compared to the single malt whisky selection. Imagine going to Poland and never trying the vodka. In a lot of ale houses you will find 10-20 malts (that is single malt, none of that blended grain-spirit crap like "Bells" or "The Famous Grouse") I know a few where you can get over 100. The ones to look out for are:

The Macallan (the best in the world, still stored in old spanish sherry vats).
Talisker (they bubble peat smoke through this one! the older the better)
The Glenlivet (the absolute definition of highland whisky)
Bunnahabhain (pronounced Boo-na-have-ayn).
Sheep Dip (historically stored in barrels marked "sheep dip" on farms, to avoid the English taxes).
Glenmorangie (orange flavoured, interesting though not really a true single malt)
Poit Dhubh
Lagavulin
Dalwhinnie
Knockando (no-can-doo)

If you visit Edinburgh, go to the "Black Bull" at the bottom of the grassmarket, they have over 120 malts available. When you drink malt whisky, you drink it straight, no ice and certainly no mixers.

Hehe.

Conversely...

One December we took a trip to New York from here in Engerland. Our local brewery here, Harvey's, makes a special beer at Christmas time, inspiringly called Christmas Ale, which is delicious, 8% by volume, and hard to come by. When we set off for NY, it was not yet available.

Found a pub in NYC which was recommended for having a wide selection of beer, and what do you suppose was their beer of the week?

Man, I got drunk that night.

Guy.

I played 2 tables of SH 5/10 and 10/20 around 3/4 of all times. Now i use to play 15/30 full and it's a bit more profitable for me for now even in terms of BB/100 than SH.

Just curious, is 15/30 your main game? At 15/30 I assume that you only play only one table, is this correct?

I play 4 tables 15/30 full. And it's my main game for now.

Holy cow 4 tables at 15/30? How hard is it to keep track of everyones betting habits?

How long can you keep that up... hours per day.

I'm able to play really long - 8 hours in a row is easy for me. My usual day norm is 6-8 hours. Full games are slow and easy so you usually don't need deep reads to be profitable player and can play 4 table easy as well. I have problems when 3-4-tabling SH, but here i even talk in chat and scan 2+2 when i play 4 tables. Some problems occured when it gets SH in a full table, but people start to play very terribly this time so even though i don't notice much of betting patterns i'm still winning a lot in autopilot.

Do you find the variance to be less severe in the 15 30 full? Also, when someone cracks your Aces heads up with a 23 to 1 shot do you refer to them as CYKA or XYICOCKA?(Sorry about the Ukrainian spelling)

Nope. Actually my variance is around 18.3 at 15 full, 16.2 at 10 short and 21.5(!) at 15 short.
