I've been playing poker for about a year now, and I know this may seem like a stupid question, but I've been wondering: what exactly is the purpose of a "card protector?" (I obviously understand the concept, and have seen them in action a thousand times, but what is the purpose of them? To keep someone from flipping over your cards? Isn't that kind of pointless, since I've never even heard of someone doing that?)

Not stupid at all. A card protector just keeps your cards from accidentally being mucked. This happens. If a potential winner gets mucked, you're going to see an unhappy player. Don't let it be you. Especially important if you are seated next to the dealer.

I was playing at the Mirage this summer, sitting in the 2 seat(next to the guy next to the dealer) and a man from across the table mucks his hand a little too hard. Since one of his cards touched one of mine, my hand was declared dead, even though we all new which cards were mine. If I woulda had a card protector on top of my cards it wouldn't have mattered that his card touched mine, and my hand wouldn't have been dead.

Good Looks guys, I had no idea your cards could be killed in a casino for something like that.
I'm bringing a card protector next time...
You never really think of stuff like that playing On-line

You can just use a chip or chips from your stack as well. It's easier than remembering to bring some gewgaw.

Remember, if you can't abstain from poker, use protection.
