Are these type of bets profitable? I am looking at the N.Y./Chicago game and currently N.Y. is at -440. Who makes these bets and why they are good/bad?

I think you're looking at the wrong side of the bet - the dog is usually where the bets go with lines like this because of the great returns.

That's what I figured. I was just curious if anyone would actually bet N.Y. -440.

I will lay you odds of 7-1 against you winning the Lotto tomorrow.

I like to package 2-3 of these plays together in a parlay for $50-$100, usually getting 2-1 on your investment for heavily favored teams. Its my entertainment while watching the game. If your can lob in a slight underdog that hits as well, your return will jump significantly. Tomorrow I like Giants, San Diego and Indianapolis as my parlay.

I also use it for the NBA as well. I got almost 2-1 tonight on Minnesota, Dallas, and Denver. Three rested teams, playing at home, vs opponents that played last night and traveled. Those back to back games vs rested teams are profitable. (3-0 this year for me so far)

If you thought that NY were going to win the game 8 times from 9 you'd have a great bet.

The people who bet those lines tend to be those that think these bets 'cant lose' within parlays.

They will take 3-4 games to get an evens or better parlay and assume they will all win.

As with any bet, it is only a good bet if it wins often enough to cover your losses... in this case 44 wins to 10 losses to break even.
