Bet the turn, without betting the turn, he could be making that move with any two cards on the river..you can't just assume the Ah is out there...make them tell you they have it.
If you ask me, the river all-in just looks like a bluff as he'd bet smaller to induce a call if he had the nuts. But then again, some people overbet like that to make it look like a bluff when they have the goods, which is another good reason to get some info on the turn.

My original plan was to check the turn and on the river:

1. If he's got the Ace he would make a small to medium bet to get me to call, I call.
2. If he is going to try to steal the pot he will probably make a medium sized bet, I call.
3. If he checks, I bet and folds to a large reraise.

I never thought he would go all-in, that totally put me in a bad position. And you're right, betting the turn is clearly the safest way to play.
