View Full Version : Why not move to Canada pros?????

I am curious why some of the full-time pro poker players don't move to Canada to save all that money on taxes. Any of you consider it? Why or why not?

I'm not a full time pro, but I do know that Canada sucks. That might have something to do with it.

I'd do it in a second if I ever got my sh** together enough to make the move.

Two things special to my case, though. First is that I live in what I consider a crummy-arse place -- Los Angeles. There aren't many places I've seen that Code:

don't

look better to me, but plenty of people live in nice places, or have families and don't want to make their kids change schools, don't want to have their wife forced to leave her job and career, etc. Once you're locked in with a family and a mortgage, it's pretty hard to change your life, and almost nobody does. Heck, most people don't move much period, even if they're born and raised in hell holes.

Second, with our screwball tax system, Americans still have to pay taxes no matter where they live. They can supposedly skip the first 80k of federal taxex, and skip state taxes entirely, if they're out of the country, but after that, they still have to pay.

For some it wouldn't be worth it to totally turn their life upside down just to save being taxed on the first 80k of their income.

For people with no responsibility, and for whom that kind of money isn't trivial, I think moving somewhere and experiencing the world a little bit sounds like a great idea. A lot of times you never know how narrow your world is and how many cool things there are to see and do until you step outside of what you're used to. But most of us are creatures of habit, not adventurers. Oh, maybe within our own suburbs or something. We might try a new burger promotion when Burger King starts advertising one on t.v.

It's something I'll seriously consider myself, though. The world is full of interesting places, and the internet is everywhere. And the tax savings to me would be very significant.

Canada is a great country and great place to live. But I wonder about the tax question. If you are a poker pro - my guess is that your winnings would be considered from employment which, under Canadian tax law, is a taxable stream of income.

Normally gambling winnings are not taxable in Canada (because gambling doesn't fall into one of the designated streams of income on which taxes can be levied) but in the case of a professional, I think the issue is arguable.

BTW - I lived in Vancouver for 2 years and am now back in the midwest and wonder why...its too dang cold here (Vancouver is very temperate but you can visit the snow easily).

I dunno about the income tax, but I know tax as a whole is higher in canada. I'm not saying it still wouldn't be cheaper, but damn, that sales tax would be greatly reduce your EV if not for the rebate you can get at the duty free before driving back to the states.

If you were a poker professional, you would have to pay tax on your poker income even though gambling winnings aren't taxable here.

Here's my opinion on this subject,

Good things about Canada:
- Everyone has health care
- People from my experience aren't as aggressive or as competitive
- There isn't as much racism as in the U.S (you guys are closing the gap here though)
- Education is partially subsidized so college is much more affordable.

Bad things about Canada:

- Taxes are considerably higher (Income tax is around 50%, Sales tax 14%)
- No private aspects of health care means it's not as cost effective and not as good (longer waits, etc...)
- People aren't as aggressive, but they aren't as motivated either.
- Our democracy isn't as good as yours, you guys vote on everything down there from social issues like gay marriage to stuff like whether you want to build a new sports centre, here too many important decisions are made solely by appointed judges or politicians. Also, censorship is huge up here and the liberal government controls all. Many radio talk shows have been banned up here as well as stuff like Fox News.
- It is ridiculously cold here in the winter. Last winter I remember a week straight of -30 to -40 temperatures.

Take it for what it's worth.

For the record, this'll never happen again. (note: I'm not saying anything about terrorists in general, just the planes).. One of the perks about being aggressive, is that if any jackass tries that again, they'll be wrestled out of the cockpit, and the plane will either recover, or it'll go down in a field. No American plane will ever hit another American building.

IMO, Canada hardly 'sucks' and i don't think it's appropriate to say so. I also don't view it as Canada, Jr...although it is obviously more like the U.S. then any other country.
It DOES get ridiculously cold up there in the winter and that is kinda miserable.

My perspective on the U.S. is kinda jaded right now though as I just completed a rather lengthy journey driving my Mom down from Wisconsin to Florida.
Our conclusions:
Wisconsin is a pretty boring state (at least to drive through....once you get outside Madison)
Illinois is a pretty boring state (again, at least to drive through)
Indiana is a pretty boring state
Kentucky is a pretty boring state
Tennessee is a pretty boring state
Alabama is a pretty boring state
Florida is a pretty boring state.....but then you get to the beach and all is well (at least for mom....i'm not exactly hyper about the beach like some people are).

most Canadians I have met also qualify as some of the nicest people I have met.
A weird aspect for me as well is that I kinda dig the canadian accent. Sure is a lot better than a lot of dumb Americans thinking they are cool by saying 'Wat-Up Bee-Aaaaatch!!!!' Maybe this is prevenlent in Canada more than I am aware though.
For me however, the accents of the rural-south (as well as the urban-south) as well as many northeastern accents just grate on my ears.

On our way down we stopped in Louisville the first night and a good friend of mine from college lives there so we went out for drinks. She and I are both from the north/midwest region and she says that even after 10 years living in Kentucky the accent still gets to her quite a bit.

Back to Canada:
Quebec City is one of my favorite cities in the world. Winters there would be pretty tough.....but it truly is a great city.
Montreal is pretty groovy as well (fwiw - I really don't speak a lick of French....but that doesn't bother me when I'm there....although it could bug some english-only americans)
Toronto is especially groovy imo.
I have been to other areas such as Sault Ste Marie (Michigan and Ontario) and that's not terribly special.
I do find it striking crossing the bridge over from Detroit to Windsor, Ont. It's like EVERYTHING got noticeably cleaner all of a sudden.

I have never been to Vancouver or to the Canadian Rockies (Calgary, etc) but from what I have read of those places I am fairly certain I would enjoy both areas....for different reasons.

Canadians also have nifty $1 and $2 coins (we have the $1 coins too...but they don't seem to be commonly used outside the freaking post-office).
Go to a soda-machine, drop in a single coin, and get your beverage. Why we still insist on using the $1 bill in this country I just don't know. With the value of the dollar today it is roughly the equivilent of having a paper version of the quarter not many years ago (I would guess that a $0.25 bill in 1970 or 1975 or so would be roughly the same as a $1 bill today).

In conclusion - give Canada a break....it's not nearly as bad as you might think.
Okay...end of rant.

But seriously, what has this thread come to? As someone else said, all Canada is is America Junior, with weaker currency.

Not for long, take a look at this:

It sucks for us Canadian online players, our earnings have decreased 15% in the past six months, because your currency sucks.

Aha, my first response from one of the big wig's on these forum's. All it took was a spelling error. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Sorry, my native tongue is Canada's "other" official language.

Evan - what box do you live in? Take a look out your window or maybe turn on your radio!

Ummm...maybe that's his problem: listens to too much 'talk' radio...Limbaugh, Hannity, Liddy etc.--they make a living running down Canada and Europe quiet unfairly so as to advance their political causes upon an unsuspecting populace.

As a friend of mine pointed out a couple of days ago Alabama voted DOWN a referendum to REMOVE a law MANDATING the racial separation of classrooms. Hasn't been enforced since 1954 but still...
...still it speaks volumes about the kind of people that will turn out in droves to the polls in part because 'talk' radio riles them up about this and that issue.

All sounds fine to me.

So many tens of millions of Americans are uninsured, and so many of the rest are under-insured, that on balance I'd take Canada's health care system any day. As well as its educational system. Our high schools have been dumbed down so much that a great many of our college students can barely write, and do what I would consider 8th grade level work, at best -- if you were a dumb 8th grader.

I think I could live without the cold, but then again I'm not crazy about excessive heat, either, like you get in so many places down here.

If you get taxed the same as anybody else when you're a professional gambler, then going to Canada as a tax dodge wouldn't work unless you own your own business and declare that to be your profession(which some gamblers do) or play strictly B&M where nobody would really know.

However, being able to exclude the first $80,000 of income sure does still make a big difference for Americans, to the tune of tens of thousands saved per year, not to mention the cost of state taxes(pretty high in places like California, zero in some other states).

If you're paying American taxes already, is your tax burden offset somehow in Canada? What kind of taxes do they make you pay if you're a tax-paying American living in Canada?

I can't believe I just spent 15 minutes of my life reading this crap. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't know what you guys think the difference is...

To quote a presumably Canadian band, Arrogant Worms, from their song, "The War of 1812".

"[The Americans] ran so fast they forgot to take their culture."
