A friend of mine got one of these for like $50 and it looks pretty sweet. Anyone else have one?

Yeah, I bought one of those sets to supplement my current set and am very happy with them. They are very close in design to the most popular style out there (suited 11.5g). They have 2 stripes on the outside instead of one, which looks good. They do have the metal inserts.

I really like the case, which has a lock on it and the chips are set in rounded trays instead of the thin dividers that constantly fall out of my other set. The added bonus was that it came with a dealer button also, which would end up costing you like $10 if you order one online.

For only $59, I thought they were a pretty good deal. I'm not sure what they're going for on EBay now, but I paid about $120 1.5 years ago for pretty much the same set.

That's a different set. The one they are talking about has 500 chips and less extra stuff.

I purchased the set for $60. Well worth the money. Chips are nice. The only complaint I have is that the blue chips (with white stripes) and the white chips (with blue stripes) are difficult to distinguish from one another when they are stacked. Every time I am betting or cashing in, I need to double check each chip in my stack.

Update: I received some sample chips in the mail today

13 Gram Pro Clay Casino Chips
12-Gram Las Vegas Poker Chips "NexGen"
11.5 Gram 4 Aces Poker Chips
10 Gram Nevada Jack Poker Chips
11.5 Gram High Roller Poker Chips
11.5 Gram Tri-Color Poker Chips (Suited and Triple Crown Designs)

And I have a set of "Costco" chips.

The 4 aces, high roller, and tri-color (both kinds) all sound VERY metallic. If I close my eyes and toss them, I would be hard pressed to tell you they were not completely metallic. They are also pretty slick. I do not like them at all.

The 12 gram Las Vegas "NexGen" chip is nice, but has a texture on it I really do not like. The same texture which is on the Nevada Jacks except the Las Vegas chip is just in the area stamped "las vegas nevada usa" where the Nevada Jack chip is completely covered with this texture. When I stacked 10 of them, it was surprisingly more slippery than expected. These chips have an insert but you really cannot tell.

The 13 gram casino chip is my favorite. The colors are nice...I like that the edge stripes are different colors. The chips can be stacked pretty high as they grip each other well. They do have the metal insert, but you really cannot tell, they do not sound any more metallic than the nevada jacks (which do not have an insert). There is a little nubbie from the injection mold on one side of each chip right at the edge of where you would put a sticker, but if you were to put stickers on, the nubbies come off easily by scratching it with your fingernail. It seems they would likely wear off during normal play also.

I have a 500 set of "Costco" chips. First off, when checking out the other chips I ran a magnet over them to see which ones have an insert. I assumed the Costco chips had an insert, considering $60 for 500 with a nice aluminum case. I was blown away to see the chip did not have an insert. The Costco chips sound almost identical to the "casino" chips, have the same "slate" feel and stack very high. They do not sound much different than the Nevada Jacks either. In looking at the Costco link above, it looks like they changed the colors in the 650 set. That would be great since in the set I have, there is a real problem distinguishing the blues from the whites when they are stacked. We get blues and whites mixed up in our stacks all the time. If the 650 set is the same material as the 500, but different colors, they have a real winner. And the price of $99 for 1000 with no shipping (if you have one close) is unbelievable. Does anyone have one of the 650 sets that they can comment on?

I think I am going to check out the 650 set from Costco and make a decision if I want to get the 650 set or the 13 gram "casino" chips. I really like the colors of the 13-grammers. I will keep you posted.

Looking at the picture in the costco link, it appears they are the standard 11.5 "dice" chips.

I've been looking for the other set but can't find it on-line since I don't need all that extra crap. Has it been discontinued or is it just not available on-line?

Don't mean to sound dumb, but,.....

how did you score sample chips?
What are chip "stickers"??
and could you please post a pic of all these different kinds of chips?

I got the samples from GamblingHabit.com. All the chips I wrote about can be found at http://gamblinghabit.com/chips/chips.htm except for the Costco chips. I cannot post a picture of those since I really do not know how. I did not get the sample pack from GamblingHabit but instead purchased individual chips. The only drawback was the shipping and handling was almost as much as the product. I think the total was around $26 for about 24 chips.
The "stickers" can be found at eBay by searching for "chip labels". There are a few vendors. The one several people wrote about is LynBark. He is a vendor on eBay and, from what I have read, does a good job. He also has a webstite at http://www.ciretech.com/lynbark/. I have requested samples from him as well and should receive them next week.

i recently got one of these sets as a gift, the chips are fantastic. my whites dont have the blue stripe that has been mentioned, so they can be easily distinguished. the case is kinda cheap, however, one of my latches has busted already, and the handle and fittings are plastic. I'm building myself a nice walnut box to hold them, though.
the set was 60$ but the price has gone up too 80$ wtf?
that's still only like 16c a chip though.

I did some sleuthing today at Costco in San Francisco in lieu of buying a new set. There were two different sets for sale--one was on display and one was in a yellow box. Both had 500 chips, but neither is the same as the set that can be found online 650/$99.

So here's the scoop: After breaking into the display model ("The Deluxe ???" set in the greenbox), I played w/ the chips and they are great! They don't slip and slide like most of chips available for sale, so they stack very well. They also feel great and sound good--my 3 most important criteria. I did notice the problem others have mentioned--that the white/blue chips look similar. A new shipment of 40 are arriving tomorrow. I'm buying b/c they wouldn't sell me the display model (plexiglass was bolted onto the open case). There was no dealer button, only cards and dice.

The chips in the yellow box sucked. After tearing thru the cellophane, opening the box, the styrofoam, and more cellophane I could feel the outside of the chips...too slick!

Hope that helps.

Any suggestion for felting a dining room table?

Thanks for the detective work! I'm trying to decide between these chips and some "real" chips. I'm leaning towards the Costco chips for the drastic price difference.

BTW, what was the price of the 500-chip set? Was it $99 too?

I got mine from Poker Cats (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=35749&item=6125565 866&tc=photo). I originally bought the oval cover but when it didn't fit, they offered to take it back and make me a custom one for no extra charge. It took a few weeks, but they came through. I haven't played on it yet (tonight will be its maiden voyage) but I'm very happy with it, both appearance and feel-wise.

The good set ("Deluxe...") in the green box 11.5grams was $60 (and so was the crappy 11.5g set in the yellow box). 12 cents a chip seems like a great deal, ya? I'm pretty sure this good set are the same chips discussed a couple posts back comparing them to "real" chips

I was worried that the chips would get slippier after getting handled for a couple minutes, so I rubbed a couple chips together and worked in some nose grease. They didn't have the same intense gritty hold that they did when I opened the package, but they were just fine. Definitely still way better than the plasticky, slick ones my friend got for signing up w/ an online site--they don't stack high enough for long enough .
