For anyone who has been considering upgrading, this may be a good time to do it.

Wow, these things just keep getting cheaper and cheaper. Does anyone think the next sale will be even lower, or will they start to level off?

$724.17 with shipping and tax. Does it get cheaper than this, because I'm considering a purchase.

I see a new one on ebay right now for much cheaper. $569 + $49 shipping

There has been massive over investment in LCD fabs. Expect continued price decreases, especially as the christmas shopping season nears. It's all a question of how long you can wait.

if you buy on ebay you have no dead pixel protection and it could be a refurb

That's pretty scary. What is dell's policy. For some reason I have it in my head that they allow up to 8 dead pixels. Somehow I don't want any dead pixels.

it's 30 days money back for absolutely any reason (e.g. you didn't like the way it smelled). if you get some with dead pixels within the 30 days they will pick up your existing one and overnight a replacement for free.

That is a good deal. I did a graduate assistantship for a Genomics company. They had alot of dell equipment but had problems getting Dell to comply with their warranty. Dell always made the admin jump through hoop after hoop. The admin eventually became so disgusted that he got rid of all the Dell's and replaced them with Sunray's. Do they do stuff like that to the private sector, or has that changed?

Sounds like the tax and shipping are pretty stiff where you are at. Check out the Dell Home site. The monitor is a little bit more, but right now they have free shipping, and you may be able to not pay taxes (until you fill out your state taxes at the end of the year, of course /images/graemlins/wink.gif ).

Wacki,

I had a very bad experience with Dell customer service. The gist of it was that I called to troubleshoot a hard drive (second one that had gone bad). The guy told me no prob, we'll send you a new one. Hard drive never came and I called back. Come to find out, they said my hard drive was under warranty (not really true) and when they guy realized he had boned it up, he just cancelled the order without bothering to make a courtesy call to me. It was an uphill battle and took several heated conversations between me and various people at Dell customer service. It definitely left a bad taste in my mouth, but I imagine I will probably order from them again as I dont see any real competition, and I dont feel up to building my own right now.

How much of an upgrade is this from a 19" flat screen (not flat panel) monitor? I have plenty of room on my desk for my current monitor and, with a high resolution, can fit four PartyPoker tables on the screen with no overlap. It looks like this is a sweet deal, and flat panels are nice, but am I going to gain much besides more real estate on my desk if I buy one of these?

You only gain real estate, and style.

I just checked the status of my order, from last night. The estimated ship date is November 22. What the hell is up with that?

LCDs can be much easier on the eyes, as well. The reduction in headaches alone makes them worth it.

You will gain 2" of screen area. The actual viewable area on you 19" CRT is probably 18" or 18.1". The viewable area on the Dell is 20.1".

Don't ever purchase a Dell product. If you want to know why let me know and i'll fill you on the long story. But trust me, never ever ever purchase a dell product. They are the worst run company, and i hate my life more as a result of their existence.
