The general consensus is having a roll of 300BB, and bringing 50BB to the table.

It depends. You want to buy in for enough so that you can spend a good few hours at the table. I want to blend in with the other gambloors so I usually go for something like $100 at 2/4 and $200 at 3/6, $300 at 6/12. Online people don't really pay attention to stack size so I buy in for more. But make sure you rebuy often enough when you drop below the key amount because you want enough in front of you that you can cap every street if you flop the nuts and they play back at you.

For example you should rebuy if you ever drop below $48 at 2/4, $72 at 3/6 or whatever. Also it's worth chipping up if you build up a huge stack that's taking up half the table, even cashing out some of it so that again you blend in with everyone else.

I'm used to seeing the degenerates at live games with five to 10 BB. If you want to "fit in", then bring $20. The 4-8 game at the Bellagio (back in March) had an average stack size of about $100, which is just barely 12 BB. Buying in for 50 BB ($400) is a bit much.

Always keep over 12 BB on the table; if you're in a big hand and lose, you want to make sure that you don't forget to rebuy before the next hand starts. Buying in for 25 BB or so is best, methinks. Unless you get too unlucky, you won't dip down near 12.

I'd suggest having 80-100 BB available. If you suffer a 100BB downswing, yer gonna hafta deal with the emotional side-effects. If you're not used to swings, or if you're having trouble adjusting to the game, then throwing another 100 BB at the game is a bad idea.
