what does the word "race" mean in NL

I'm not sure when or how it originated, but "race" is used when 2 players (or more, but it's almost always 2 players) are just about even to win a pot. The most common ocurrence is when someone holds a pocket pair and another player holds towo overcards(2 cards higher than the other players pair) The person with the pocket pair has a slight advantage, but it's basically 50-50
