...or are they the same thing?

TIA, Steve

<I think I have this right>

Sucking out == calling bets when you should have folded.
Bad beat == strong hand loses to miracle card on river.

I have AA and you have 23

I raise preflop and you call.

The flop is 4JK

I have the best hand and you have three to a straight.

I bet and you call (you have incorrect odds to call because you need runner runner to win).

Turn is a 6.

I bet and you call (you still have incorrect odds to call because you have in an inside straight draw [3 outs])..

River is a 5.

I bet, you raise, I call.

I show AA and you show the straight, 2-6.

It was a "bad beat" because you caught your winning hand on the river with incorrect odds to call any previous bet.

You are considered to have "sucked out" because you needed runner runner to win the hand and called all the way.

Calling stations are the most likely ones to "suck out" as they don't know when to fold.

The funny part is that now that you know what it means, you can announce to the table "I am NOT going to suck out on you this hand" and vice versa "I AM going to suck out on you this hand". Very funny, especially when you have the nutz and are doing some freelance advertising. It can put people on tilt in a heart beat /images/graemlins/grin.gif
