View Full Version : Stud hi/lo: limping on 3rd with a big pair

I have seen that many stud hilo players limp on 3rd with a big pair violating the "rule" that with a big pair it's better to try to thin the field (or to fold if there's a threat of a reraise from a higher card behind). Probably they want to see the fourth card cheaply and then play accordingly.

What do you think about this play?

The "rule" is generally from Stud high. In Stud Hi-Lo whether you raise or not is highly situational. If you are in late position and have several limpers, you may want to limp. If you are in early position from the bring in, you may want to raise.

In Hi-Lo you may get calls from a low draw or two. Then it is OK to raise on 3rd. If they catch bricks on 4th, then bet into them. You are getting 2:1 on your bets (if they don't catch a low, 1.5:1 if it is a split pot). If they raise back, be careful. They can back into two pair or a low straight to outdraw you.

If an Ace comes on fourth street to any of your opponents, and you have Kings or Queens be ready to fold if you catch bad and there is betting or raising from the Ace.

There is so much more to it but it depends on the situation. That's why 7CS8 is so interesting!
