I recently played in a party poker satellite to try to win a cruise for 2 and the $10,000 entry fee into their big tournament. About 1,200 people entered and the top 19 people won the package that was valued at $12,600. So 19th place won the same as 1st place. The next 3 places were also paid.
20th - $5,500
21st - $3,500
22nd - $2,500
Unbelievably, I took 23rd and won absolutely nothing. My last hand has been bothering me. I had $24,000 chips. The blinds were at 7,500/15,000. I was in the big blind with K9s. Everyone folded to the small blind who raised. I figured that there was a decent chance he had nothing combined with the fact that all I had left was 9,000 chips after posting. So 9,000 more to win 48,000 normally would be an easy decision. However, in this case, I know that if i fold, i'm pretty much guaranteed 22nd place and atleast $2,500. But i would have absolutely no chance of finishing in the top 19 and winning the $12,600 package because I would be left with only 9,000 chips, with 7,500 going in the next hand as I would be the small blind. Well I decided to call figuring I would have a good chance to win the pot and then with 48,000 chips I could fold every hand no matter what and just wait for 3 people to get knocked out to win the main prize. When the cards turned over all the small blind had was jack, 5 offuit. However, a jack came on the flop and I lost the hand. I think I made the right decision, but obviously i'm not sure or I wouldn't be posting this. What should I have done?

I came in 13th when 12 were getting $10K seats at the WSOP (I got $480). It sucks, but there is nothing you could have done there. You had the two choices you mentioned, play with a nice suited hand, or wait for the next hand and get all in with what could be AA or more likely, 54o.

Somebody has to wind up in this spot - every tournament, this time it was you. Better luck next time.

It happens. I would have done the same thing.
