Hey Everyone,

I will be taking my first trip to Tunica in December and would appreciate any advice you could offer about hotels, games, things to do, etc. there. I will be going from Sat or Sun through Weds in December. I'm thinking of staying at Horseshoe...what are the games like there? How about during the week? I like to play mid limits...like 15-30 or 20-40 preferably. Are these always available? What are some of the other rooms like? Any others worth seeing?

Any good restaurant recommendations? Things to see? Also..are there shuttles from the Memphis AP to Tunica? Anyone know how they work, how much they cost, etc?

Please let me know and all other thoughts also appreciated.

I'm not sure how the shuttles work but I'm sure they exist.

10/20 and 20/40 is spread regularly at the Horseshoe. Elsewhere I think Gold Strike and the Grand would spread that high on weekends but I'm not sure.

People have posted that gold-strike offers good poker-room rates. Not sure how much you have to play to get one of these rates but December is a good opportunity to score a good rate...Unless they have somethig special going on it is not the most active time of year for casinos.

Gold Strike is right next door to Horseshoe so you can walk back and forth. You have to drive about 5 minutes to get to the Grand. there are some shuttles that can take you back and forth for most of the day.

Personally, I think the Horseshoe is where it's at for Tunica poker and I think a lot of others agree with me.
I'll head over to the Gold Strike only if the waiting-list is too long at the Shoe.

Hollywood and Sam's town also have poker-rooms about 5 minutes drive to the south of Horseshoe/Gold Strike but I'm not a big fan of either room.

Gold Strike, Horseshoe and Grand are all non-smoking rooms....you have to step away from the tables between hands to catch a few puffs if that's your thing.
For a non-smoker like me it's fantastic.
I think Sam's Town and Hollywood are still smoking rooms but I'm honestly not sure.

In Tunica there is virtually nothing to do outside the casinos.
The Horseshoe and Gold Strike have a couple of decent restaurants.
the Asian restaurant at Horseshoe is supposed to be good although I haven't been there. Also, the steak-houses at Horseshoe and Gold Strike are pretty good.
The Grand promotes their Italian restaurant a lot but I haven't been there. Have heard mixed reviews.

For other non-casino activities you are pretty much looking at Memphis which is 35 minutes up the road. Beale Street is pretty fun...particularly on weekend nights.
Lots of bars, music, etc.

Best ribs I recommend the diner on Beale called the Blues City Cafe. Not much for decor (it looks like a normal diner) but I think the ribs there are the best.
Others like the Rendevous which is just a couple blocks from Beale and is more famous and generally is a nicer dining 'atmosphere'.

Peabody Place in the Beale Street area is a decent mall and movie-theatre as well.

Graceland, Sun Records and the Stax Museum of Rock and Soul are all worthwhile tourist venues and are pretty fun.

That is a good report. You have to play six hours to qualify for the poker room rate at the Gold Strike. Its like $25 a night. You can play three hours in the evening and three the next day.

Thank you for the GREAT information. I'll let you know when I'm coming down and maybe we can grab a beer or something.

See ya later...

One thing about the Gold Strike. They track your time for your room comps rather closely. This means you are stuck playing in some lousy 3-6 games or 1-5 stud for 6 hrs a day.

At the Horseshoe it's not so much the case and the 10-20 and 20-40 games are there.

Call the horseshoe after 10am, before 6pm, ask for Carole Lambert, she will get you poker rate and a Limo pickup from the airport.

BTW The Horseshoe Rooms are fantastic. Book ASAP as it is always sold out.

That never really bothered me, if I drive 7 hours to get there, I'm damn sure going to play six. Next trip I want to play at the Horseshoe so I'll PM you Bigfishead, so I can show up when you are there.

The rooms in the new hotel are great. The rooms in the old hotel are nice, but they're directly above the casino floor and you can hear muffled casino noise. /images/graemlins/frown.gif If they try to give you a room on the 2nd floor, ask for something else.
