I use to think National Geographic was one of the best magazines. But I now think that the Smithsonian is one of the top magazines to read for general and special interest. For example, the most recent issue (November) that I just relieved today has a feature article on the election of 1800 (Jefferson Vs. Adams), an article on Naples, one on Art Deco, another on a guy that walked across America, etc. The magazine covers a broad range of subjects from politics, history, culture, and art to adventure. In the October issue there is an article about Eddie Grant, the major league baseball player that volunteered for duty in WW1 and was killed in action. The diversity of this magazine is really one of its best features and selling points. The writing is almost always well done and the photography is superb. This is a magazine that I think many here would enjoy; I highly recommend it.
