I just started playing hilo micro limits on paradise. I am a bit tentative as to what to go in with starting hands and how to play correctly the nut low because I haven't been getting as much as I can from the pot.. . if anyone knows of a place on the web where I could get some good information about the game, like starting hands, etc. It would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Randy

High-Low-Split Poker by Ray Zee is the best source.

Thanks for the response Keith, although I am looking for the free variety , as I do not have the bankroll for a book right now.

The Winner's Guide to Casino Poker by edwin silberstang has a pretty good primer on 7stud and 7stud hi/lo split, and it's only $5.99.

or if you have a Barnes and Noble or Borders near you, just go sit down and read the 2+2 books for free. that's what i did... sorry, mason et al. i'll get around to buying 'em one of these days. /images/smile.gif

I would submit that if you can't afford to buy a book, you can't afford to play poker. I used to play a lot of high-low with a $.50 limit, and swings of $50 or more were pretty commonplace, so a $35 book could pay for itself very quickly, even at microlimits. Buy Ray Zee's book. Read and re-read it. Trust us.

For free advice, post hands here. I tend to play a confused brand of stud/8, but there are people here who know what they're talking about.

I made about $3,000 in that game before i got bored and moved on up. I made an awful lot before getting Ray's book too.

This game has no ante, play very good hands only. Throw away all 8xx, and don't play 7xx unless you have flush/straight potential.

KK, QQ, all go in the muck, unless you can play no more than 3 handed. Play Aces but you want to raise to thin the field. Obviously any six draw, or rolled up hand is playable.

And make sure that you are drawing the best in your direction (although hopefully you play more 2 way hands). This is more important if you are up against Jammers, and there are only a few that jam correctly in the game you talk about.

And don't be stupid and try and steal the antes when there are none.

Having played with you I don't doubt your ability to slaughter these games. However something isn't adding up. In an earlier post you stated in that after 1000 hours in micro stud games your hourly rate was $4 in stud high and $7 in Stud/8. Seems like you would've won more than $3K in that period. By the way good luck at the $2-4.

I HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY A $35 BOOK, I CHOOSE NOT TO, AS I WOULD RATHER HOLD ONTO THOSE 35 BIG BETS. I WOULD APPRECIATE GETTING FREE INFO. I DON'T NEED ANY INDEPTH STUFF, JUST SIMPLE STARTERS, ETC WHICH I ASSUME I WOULD BE ABLE TO GET ON THE WEB SOMEWHERE FOR FREE... THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE.

That 1000 hours is played at a variety of limits, and i just thought thay $3K was a good approximation for that game. Now that i think about it i am more like $5.5K at that game and maybe a touch over $5K at $2/4. And i am currently down a whopping $36 at $5/10.

None of this is important however. Randy has found the right place to ask for advice, and a great game to learn the nuances of stud hilo play. Randy, beat the game for $500 and then move up to $2/4. The $1/2 game is crap due to the very high ante structure.
