View Full Version : The "Esprit de Corps" of our stud Forum

The French term “Esprit de Corps” is a description for “The Spirit of the team” or “the brotherhood of the group.”

It can be an enormously powerful motivator for achievement. It is the respect that we develop for one another as members of a group.

For thousands of years commanders have known that their troops rareley “give their lives for their country” but they almost invariably were willing to die before they let their friends or their corps down.

When Alexander the Great’s army voted to desert him in Persia, he requested permission to talk to his troops one more time.

The thousands of Greek and mercenary soldiers willingly granted his request, because they knew that there was nothing that he could say that could inspire them to go one mile further.

Alexander mounted the pedestal, faced his army, striped naked, and said 12 words that changed the history of man.

“This was for Greece” he said and he let his army gaze at the many scars that covered the front side of his body.

“But THIS was for my love of you” He said.

And he turned around and showed his army that there was not a single scar on the back side of his body.

What he was saying to his soldiers, was that while he had suffered a multitude of wounds standing side by side with his soldiers.

That in the many years that they had fought together, he had NEVER once turned his back on his friends and companions.

“Esprit de Corps” Alexander never said another word.

Historians report that noiselessly 10,000 troops picked up their arms, and began their 400 mile march across the desert to conquore one more empire.

The only day that his troops took off, was the day that they stopped,to BEHEAD the instigators, that had talked them into turning their backs on their Alexander.

Statistically only one in ten poker players ever buys a book on Poker game strategy.

It has been said that only one in ten of the players that buy a book on poker strategy reads it once, and that only one in a thousand players reads a stratagy book twice.

We can only guess about how rare and special each member of our forum is. We probably represent one in every fifty thousand players.

The potential for our stud forum is enormous.

There is only one thing that can stand in the way of our sucess, and that would be a loss of respect for each other.

Poker is a science. Self criticizm and criticizm by of colegues of our opinions is the sine qua nom for the growth of any science.

But the key to remember is that as students of the game, while we have a responsability to respectfuly criticise the opinions of our colleges that we feel are incorect.

There NEVER is any room for criticizing of our fellow members personally. Or for demeaning them.

Because personal criticizm destroys the Esprit de corps of our forum.

AND BECAUSE:

"this side" is because of my love for you”

Most Sincerely,

Doc AZ

Touching sentiments. However if i get over to Vegas any time soon i'llbe aiming to stab you all in the wallet, so make sure you don't keep it in your back pocket.

A good anecdote and an even better point. Whether the topic is poker or technology, "flaming" has destroyed countless forums. This site is unusual in that almost every post in the stud forum is well considered and contains specific analysis of game/meta-game situations. Let's keep it that way!

But how about telling us about some of your poker scars, at least the ones that taught you something.

the best posts on 2 + 2 ever written..and how true....

imho poker can create an opportunity for certain personality types to survive with very poor interpersonal skills...but note i did not say every poker player, or even a majority of poker players lack basic interpersonal stores..

we can use this forum to improve our ability to deal with each other...and opposing ideas..gl all
