Quiz $5/$10 VS $6/$12 (it’s the rake stupid)

Two fairly good Stud players decided to have a contest to see which Stud game was the most profitable to play. Player A sat down at a $5 dollar/ $10 dollar Stud table, which had a 50-cent ante. And a one dollar brings in.

Player B sat down at a $6 dollar/ $12 dollar Stud game which had $1 dollar ante, and a $2 dollar bring in.

Each player averaged playing 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 50 weeks a year.

Each player was dealt 30 hands an hour, and averaged intentionally calling 5 hands an hour.

As well as these hands each player averaged being the forced bring in 4 times an hour. Of each 4 forced bring in hands, an average of 1 hand turned out to be playable and the other 3 were promptly mucked.

Each player won an average of 3 big bets an hour BEFORE deducting the moneys which each player forfeited by paying for antes on hands that he didn’t play, and for paying for the forced bring in hands that turned out not to be promptly mucked.

After deducting these two factors and the factor that each player tipped the dealer one dollar for each hand he won.

1 How much did the $5 dollar/ $10 dollar stud player win durring the year ?

2 How much did the $6 dollar / $12 dollar stud player win ?

2 How many dollars did each player pay the Casino in Tokes (dealer tips) over the years time ?

Most sincerely,

Hello again Doc,

First, I don't think we can achieve the answers you are looking for by the information given.

Second, I think the analysis as a whole is somewhat misleading. It shouldn't be a matter of 'Which game is more profitable?' It should state something like 'Which is more profitable for a given type of player?'

You being an excellent player, know that you can't play these two games in a similar fashion. 5-10 and 6-12 are close in the 'monetary' sense but the ante/bring in structure makes them two VERY different games.

Dear CJ,

I was trying to construct a situation in which similar profitabilities would be compared. One in which the only relative variable would be the ante.

That of course is imposable. The relative difference between two games, one requiring $15 dollars an hour in antes. And the other $30 dollars an hour in antes of course is enormous. But you are right. Thank you for your post.

There is no comparison. I would love the 5/10 with all my heart, and shudder at the thought of the 6/12.

And as for toking dealers you people have it lucky. A $5 rake (from $150+ pots) goes with a $5 toke over here. Obviously you don't toke every hand but the dealers do very well. Bigger games come with $10-20 tokes. i know a guy who makes over $70,000 a year dealing cards for 14 hours a week.

And then you can go to Aussie. 5% rake capped at $15 regardless of what stakes or how many players at the table. Doesn't make a shorthanded holdem game look very attractive.
