My Vegas trip is next week. I'll be staying in the Venetian and will be working most of the time, but will be able to slip out and play poker for a few

hours here and there. I appreciate all the info (esp. thks to Dynasty) on the best places to play. One final question: what is the closest decent poker room to the Venetian -- the one I can walk to in five minutes when I just have an hour or two?

Best not to play if you only have an hour , or two.

Mirage is a close walk from the Venitian and has good stud games.

Sorry, didn't mean to rain on your parade. I just don't like to be rushed when I'm playing. Everybody is different, have fun.

Yeah, I prefer longer sits and will have time for them on Fri. and Sat. nights. Due to work, my only way to play other times is to fit in short sessions. It's either that or go the pool!

The Mirage has a much better poker room, but

for a quick fix of $1/5 stud try the Flamingo

Hilton. It's on the same side of the street as the Venetian so you don't have to cross Las Vegas Blvd, and the poker room is close to the front door. The mirage room is quite aways off the

street, and you may get a seat right away, or

there may be a long wait for stud, hard to predict.

Granted the Flamingo is smokey, but if you've

got 90 minutes to kill, it beats the slots or

watchin TV in the room.

Here's a map

The home page http://www.cheapovegas.com has a list of hotels/casinos, with descriptions of poker rooms if the casinos have one. I can't say how reliable the descriptions are, but they are clearly intended for the novice player.

I haven't read the other posts but The Mirage is across the street. You shouldn't need to go any place else, especially if you want to play stud.

What about the $1-5 and $4-8 games at the Bellagio?

I'm guessing Mason isn't a regular at those games =).

Flamingo is definitely worth the short walk if you want a 1-5 game full of loose tourists. It's just about the only 1-5 Stud game in Vegas that attracts them (except maybe Mandalay on a good night).

For more variety of spreads, and more of a challenge, try the Mirage. Be aware that Mirage poker room is smoke-free.

...if you're looking for soft low-limit games. They spread exclusively 1-5 stud and similar hold 'em (don't know the hold 'em limit since I sat down only at the stud table) and the players there are looser and less skilled than at the Mirage. The staff is very nice, ditto the room. The only drawback is that they allow smoking. I happen to know that Mr. B did very nicely in this room during his Vegas trip!

But not as well as Mr. RB, who averaged 1.6 bbs/hr in his lone sit there...
