There's another series going on besides Bos./Yanks, you know.

Stros fans, what do you think about Peter Munro tonight? I don't think he makes it out of the 2nd inning, and Garner is forced to bring Clemens in.

Cards in 7.

slavic
10-20-2004, 12:39 PM
If Munro can't hold it close then he is in there to eat innings. If he gives up 4 or 5 early expect him to stay as long as 6 innings followed by the dregs of the bullpen. Tomorrow there will only be 4 pitchers Clemens, Wheeler, Lidge, and maybe the Big O.

MrGo
10-20-2004, 12:51 PM
I agree. If he gets rocked early, he will stay in so the bullpen will be rested for game 7. I expect Munro to pitch a good game. People underestimated Backe and look at what he did in game 5.

'Stros in 6!!!

I agree they should win today though.

MrGo

That is a high line. Houston has had success vs. Morris in the past. I guess the oddmakers are just not giving Munro any credit.

Well good luck with the game today St. Louis fans! Should be a hell of a game.

Could someone explain to me what that means. As far I can tell it says the Astros are 240 run underdogs to the Cardinals.

hutz
10-20-2004, 01:48 PM
While it is a funny coincidence that the -240 may be both the money line and an indication of by how many runs the Cardinals should win today, what it really means (as my minimal sports gambling knowledge leads me to believe) is that one must bet $240 to win $100 if he picks the Cardinals to win the game. If this is wrong, I'm sure there'll be plenty of people who will set me straight.

slavic
10-20-2004, 01:57 PM
It means to make $100 on a bet on StL. you have to lay $240.

St Louis has a better D
Morris won 15 v 5 Munro
St Louis is at home
St Louis faces elimination
Slugging is about even though I'd give the nod to StL.
Managers TLR has alot of exp over "Scrapiron" I loved Phil Garner as a player, he left it all on the field but he just hasn't done it yet as a manager. He's above average but TLR has won championships.

So money should go towards the Cardinals in a fairly heavy fashion. The one wildcard is that the Astros are freerolling today. Take the stress down a notch and certain players play better. (AKA Biggio)

Clemens is not coming in if Munro gets rocked. The whole point of saving him until Game 7 is because that would give him his full 4 days rest. Since today is Oswalt's day to throw between starts, he will be the one that comes in if the Astros are trying to keep the game close or if they need a key out or two in the middle innings.

That -240 line is ridiculous. I know the Cards are at home and facing elimination, but the Astros rocked Morris last time out and Munro was able to keep the Cards at bay, at least early in the game.

nolanfan34
10-20-2004, 04:17 PM
You all made good points about the pitching matchups, and Clemens, etc. But that doesn't mean Phil Garner is going to act/think logically. We'll see what happens.

Not a good start for the Cards. I'm surprised anyone has ever thrown out Beltran trying to steal.

They just showed a replay, apparently he had lower back spasms. According to Harold Reynolds, Womack is the key for the Cards today, so it looks like they're in trouble.

The real key is keeping gas can Morris away from the Astros hot bats. I think this will be a 10-8 Cards final.

Today - 1/1 with a walk and a HR.

Who would you rather have? Pujols or Beltran?

[/ QUOTE ]

If I was starting a team from scratch? Pujols, and it isn't close. Take a look at the career numbers, age, etc. Yes, Beltran is better on defense, but Pujols is looking to be a once-in-a-generation type of hitter. I don't think Beltran has had a season over 1.000 OPS, and he's really a .275-.280 career hitter (off the top of my head).

I like Beltran, but he's going to be highly overpaid this summer because he essentially had two hot weeks at the right time of the year.

MrGo
10-20-2004, 05:57 PM

[/ QUOTE ]

OK, it's close for argument's sake, but in the end, on top of the skill difference, would you rather have Pujols for 10 good years or Beltran for 6? Because that's another factor with the age difference.

Well, that's assuming Pujols is really 24 of course.

BTW, that was a huge inning for Morris to get through. I barely had time to look up from my desk and the inning was over.

I just don't see how we can win this game. Stranded 10 through 7, and missed many chances to score. The bullpen hasn't done the job all series and it's just too much to ask them to pitch 4 shutout innings. I see the Astros taking this one. It's just too tough to miss that many opportunities and not have it come back to bite you when it's a playoff game. If I were an Astro fan, I'd be so excited right now that I even had a chance to win this one.

1. Beltran's main advantage versus Bagwell at this point in his career is in the power department. Bagwell hits about as many singles and doubles, and that's what you're really trying to prevent here.

2. There is some consequence to putting the winning run on base, especially a guy who is fast enough to score from second on a double.

3. To some extent you can have it both ways. Pitch carefully to Beltran and proceed if you're ahead in the count. You can still put him on if you get behind.

This is true, but when you only need one out, I think the main thing you think about as a manager is who is easier to get out, Beltran or Bagwell? I'd go with Bagwell.

3. To some extent you can have it both ways. Pitch carefully to Beltran and proceed if you're ahead in the count. You can still put him on if you get behind.

I agree with this to a point. But if your backup plan is to walk him if you fall behind anyway, then I see no reason to put your pitcher in a situation where he can make a mistake with a pitch to the hottest hitter in the game.

Was talking on the phone with my Dad, who lives in Chicago, during the game. When he swung, I just said into the phone "gone."

Whew. And it works out better like this because hopefully Lidge might possibly, maybe, possibly be a little bit tired tomorrow. Maybe.

Actually, he had thrown so few pitches that I was surprised that Garner didn't bring him out to fact the heart of the order for one last inning.

No kidding. 9 batters, 5 k's. That's sick.

In the back of Garner's mind though, he had to be thinking about needing Lidge in game 7.
