So what your saying then is the game will be close?

Do you really think a rainout favors NY that much? Boston's pen is probably in worse shape than NY's, and at least the Yankees know their starter will be able to pitch. I think momentum means a lot less than that, especially since the game is in New York.

That being said, Go Sox.

You know, I could really go for a nice Sox blowout victory. Having the Sox put up 8 in the first three innings and cruise to a 10-2 or so victory would do my heart and stomach a lot of good.

If we must go another 14, though, that's fine - just get me that 'W'.

Definite ixnay to a rainout. We got all the momemtum now(yes I know, momemtum in baseball is as good as your next day's starting pitcher) and I don't agree that our bullpen is in worse shape simply because our bullpen is deeper.

They basically have 3 guys they trust and one of them, Quantril is hurt. The other two, Gordon and Rivera have been maxed out so who can they go to?

I guess the big thing for me is, if you expect Schilling to pitch well and the Sox to hit Lieber, then Rivera and Gordon don't enter into it nearly as much as whoever the Sox will use to close it out. And since the Sox pen is pretty much maxed out (you're right, btw; the Yanks pen isn't in any better shape). But if the game gets pushed til tomorrow and Schilling outpitches Lieber then, you can turn it over to Embree/Timlin/Foulke a lot more comfortably than you could tonight.

Of course, there's no guarantee that Schilling will pitch well, or even be able to pitch for very long at all. But if that's the case, you're better off with a rested bullpen, too. At least the Yankees know Lieber can physically throw 5 innings.

I am not familiar with the full Sox roster but are there any alternatives to Damon at this point? He has contributed nothing up to this point in the ALCS. He is fortunate the Yankees didn't score in the top of the inning following his horrible attempt at a bunt. Or is the potential replacement for Damon just not that attractive an option?

ThaSaltCracka

I don't think there is a viable option for Damon. I say keep him in because he plays good D, and runs the bases well, when he gets on.

Either Kapler or Roberts but it ain't gonna happen. Damon was one of the MVP's of the regular season and Francona will stay with him hoping he breaks out.

But his slump may be related to recent reoccurence of migranes he got from the head collsion that knocked him out(literally) of part of the '03 playoffs.

I am sorry but Roberts and Kapler are nothing more than role fillers. They pinch hit or run and play late inning defense, they do not start. So starting them in a potentially season ending playoff game is not a vaible choice.

Damon is just in a funk and is due to blow up in either this game or if neccesary, game 7.

You are right. To use Roberts as anything but a situational weapon would be crazy after the boost he gave the Sox late in the last 2 games. He destroyed Gordon's concentration last night just by being on base. You've got to love having a guy like that on your team.

see my response to Toro.

Foulke has pitched 4 2/3 in the last 24 hours, just like Mariano. If the Sox are behind when the starters turn the ball over to the pen, they're in trouble no matter which day they play. This game hinges on the performance of Schilling (or Arroyo if it turns out that Schilling can't go).

A 5 (or 10) game slump in baseball means nothing. Damon has been worthless, bad timing. He could go 0-4 or 1-5 tonight, but he could just as easily score 4 runs. You don't bench one of the best leadoff players in the league because of a few bad games.

Pitch Count through five innings:

Schhilling: 67
Lieber: 86

Lieber should break 100 pitches in the 6th. That's the general time when pitchers get into trouble. If Lieber allows some baserunners, Torre will have to consider going to the pen.

At Schilling's pace, he won't make his 100th pitch until the 8th. The Sox just need his ankle to hold up.

I'm not sure these pitch counts matter anymore. Both pitchers got their most basic job done. They went deep into the game and gave their offense a reasonable chance of winning. Major props to Schilling and minor props to Lieber (hey, he gave up that 3-run homer).

I think Schilling can complete this game. He's throwing strong and is under 100 pitches. This is a guy who can throw 150.

I'm guessing it's somewhere in 7.09 that begins "It is interference by a batter or a runner when..." but I can't find just what clause applies. Rodriguez wasn't interfering with an attempt to field the ball.
