Any hunter or fisherman that got any tips for a nice knife sharpener?
I feel a need for one after my last hunting trip, skinning 3 mooses unsharpened my knife pretty good and i dont have the skill to use a standard whetstone to get it razor sharp.

The Lansky System (http://www.lansky.com/products/systems/deluxe.html) looks interesting buts expensive so i dont wanna buy the pig in sack. Anyone that used one and got some feedback?

lansky and gatco system.. the one i use are the best for getting a perfect edge. but not good in the field. in the field i use a diamond stick. a couple swipes and an elk or deer turn into pieces. bring a folding saw for cutting the pelvic bone.
the trick to uses a stone is to make sure you hold a constant angle about 20 degrees. vary much and you dont get it sharp. same with any system. the angle must be held constant.
the ceramic sticks give a razor sharp edge but dont last long and arent worth doing unless you want to shave with your knife.

Ray Zee is dead on about the sharpeners. There are ways to get a better edge, but that is a good system.

If you want knifes goto http://www.knifeforums.com/ the people at that forum know their stuff. It's a forum just about knifes and there are guys there with 9,000 posts. Go figure.

As for knives, I like www.coldsteel.com (http://www.coldsteel.com), but there are many better ones out there. It just requires more $$$$ (usually). www.grohmannknives.com (http://www.grohmannknives.com) are nice as well. Goto coldsteel and request a free DVD. Watch it and you will never want to get anything cheaper than coldsteel!

I use the Gatco, and it works great. Looks like the Lansky is the same principle. As Ray says, the key to sharpening is maintaining the angle. These systems take a few minutes to learn to use, and then keeping the angle is a no-brainer.

Another place for knife and sharpening info is

You hunt? I'm suprised you make so many anti-gun posts since you are a hunter.

Thanks for the feedback.

Gonna check the shipping fees and see if it will be worthwhile to order a system.

Lansky, and you can throw away your razor and use your knife. Especially if you finish it off on the ceramic sticks. Remember what everyone said, whatever you use, the angle is EVERYTHING!

Last time I had to Skin a white tail I used one of these. http://image.basspro.com/images/images2/54000/54339a.jpg

It was quite nice. For larger game make sure you take a folding saw or a hatchet, you don't want to use your hunting knife as a chopping instrument.

Oh and I just use the same old long wet stone I've had for years. Patience and time, besides what else are you doing in camp? Drinking?
