I currently own 500 "clay composite" chips, and this has always been enough. I think the biggest game I ever pulled off with just this set was a 14-person tourney.

I just put in an order for 500 of the ChipCo "suits" set with the following quantities:

White x150
Red x100
Green x100
Black x100
Purple x50

I want to make sure I am covered, as these chips need to be sufficient for a long time. My question is, with these quantities and the flexibility of no denomonations on these chips, what sort of situation would it take find myself without enough chips?

You'll never plain run out, if that's what you mean, unless you have a gigantic tourney. The only problem you might face is a slightly awkward number of starting chips for a medium-sized tourney, but it's not a show-stopper.

Most of the 500 sets I have seen are either:
150 WHITE
150 RED
100 GREEN
50 BLUE
50 BLACK

(Most common mix)

or

200, 100, 100, 50, 50.

I would go with one of those. I don't see a problem with your mix, I would just shorten one of the other colors (probably the black) to add to another.

Maybe it's just me, but I am having a difficult time justifying getting a lot of the white chips. In my home poker game, the white chips are not used that often as we all tend to use the red, green, black chips primarily. Even in a tournament format where white=1, red=5, green=25... most of us don't bother with the white chips and start out at the red level. For me, if I was putting a tournament set together, I'd use:

250 red
150 green
50 black
50 purple

But that's just me. Save the white chips for low-ante games, but not necessarily needed for tourney's. Better yet, buy two sets. One for poker nite ring games and another set for tourneys. The more chips the merrier!
