A group of my friends and I play a weekly 10$ buy-in tourney, usually among 5-10 people. We used to play with a set of same-colored chips distributed equally among the players, but now, I've purchased better chips (multiple colors!). Also, we tend to increase the blinds every half-hour, but we don't enforce the rules very strictly. To begin with, we never really know how to split the prize money properly.

I was wondering if you guys can help me figure out a good system to work with, so we don't have to waste time bickering amongst ourselves before and during the game. I'd like to know how to distribute the chips in a proper way (we have five different colours), when to increase blinds and what the payout should be.

Thank you very much. The game is in a few hours, so I'd appreciate some help very much.

EDIT: Oh, and we intend to play for maybe 4 to 6 hours.

how many chips and how many people?

also how many colors and how many of each color would help.

So you have a small group, you want to play for 4-6 hours, but you don't want to enforce blind increases strictly, and you are not clear on how to divide prize money.

Why play tourney style at all?

If you like playing no limit, just go ahead. Keep the blinds at the same level all night, and the payout at the end is what players have in front of them. Plus if everyone wants to play all night, they can.

Every bit of information you could possibly need to organize your home tourney is on the following website. Including blind structure, payouts, rules, etc... You shoul definitely check it out. Having these rules set before hand will help you in the long run w/ dispute resolution as well. Hope this helps. Scott

what the rules are isn't as important as having rules. www.homepokertourney.com (http://www.homepokertourney.com) will give you a good blind structure/layout.

i find this particularly funny. people always want to play "tourney style" haha... like they don't know what a cash game is.

constantly at umass if we have a game going or something, someone will walk in and be like,

"what are you guys doing?"

"playing poker"

"oh,.. what, like... buy in?"

"huh"

"like, buy in or tourney style?"

"umm... it's a cash game."

"oh alright"

people just have no idea due to TV

which is a good thing

Try getting Tournament Director SW online - it's free. You can use a default setup or ask the SW to "recommend" blinds/rounds. You can set percentages or fixed dollar amounts for prizes. SW is easy to use and set up. I've used it for 10-man tourneys and 60-man tourneys and it works great - just like being in a tourney at a casino.

I agree, Tournament Director is GREAT! However, it is not free. It's donation-ware: http://www.thetournamentdirector.net/donations.html

... and well worth a donation.

right on. throw Corey some cash, so that he's encouraged to continue the good work.

Doesn't have to be a lot, but if you'll pay $5 for a "Dealer" lammer to enhance the experience you can cough up a few more dollars for a cool timer.

Sorry for not making the distinction. I meant that it was free to preview. I agree, well worth a donation for the use you will get out of it.
