Just as a disclaimer, this post is long, boring and has little to no substance. Read on at your own Risk!

I've been playing SNG's for the past 7 months, and I've been playing SNG's successfully for the past 4 months. But as the leaves began to turn here in Canada, I too felt the call of change, and so I went on a pilgrimage to broaden my poker horizons.

I was a somewhat successful SNG player at the $20 and $30 level, multi-tabling for around $30/hour, and actually thoroughly enjoying every minute of it. I was playing in the range of 100 tourneys a week without really getting burnt out. But then I felt that oh so common yearning for more.

I decided I should play the poker field to see what was out there, and so began exploring other games, structures, and sites.

My first venture was into the world of NLHE ring games. I mingled in the $25 and $50's on Party and PS, had some success, but ultimately got bored. I found that after a couple of hours I found it hard to concentrate. The fact that there was never an end, that I could never have all of the chips gave the game a monotony that I have never before experienced in Poker. I started posting on the NL forum, giving advice on all sorts of hands, but never actually having the desire to sit down and play. I started to realize that it was going to take a long time for me to make more $/hr here than at SNG's and so decided to move on.

Next was the oh so familiar limit ring games that I began my poker career playing some 4 years ago. There's no doubt that they offer by far the most game selection as well as most potential return. I shuffled my money from one site to another, collecting on the various bonus' (never too proud to be a bonus whore), although ran into a terrible realization when after collecting in the range of $500 in bonus's my bank account was even. What made this especially bizarre is that I was earning in the range of 2BB/100 according to PT. So where was the leak? Well, due to recent interest hikes here in Canada, our beloved loonie has been reaching record highs. This resulted in my nice earnings being wiped out due to the constant losses I experienced shuffling money from site to site. But back to the limit ring. Man, compared to limit, NL ring was like a bloody bull fight. I forgot how much limit rings can feel like cages. But no problem I thought, I'll solve the boredom by just playing more tables. So I was up to 6, then 8, then 10, and finally 12 games at a time. Now my poker time was not only monotonous, but was also stressful. This lasted for about 1000 hands before I just stopped playing.

I mingled in the MTT's for a while but couldn't find the necessary large blocks of time in my schedule. Honestly, I do see a lot of potential in them though.

And so after a couple of months away, I find myself back where I started: Posting long boring posts here, and stepping into the occasional SNG. There's no real point to this post, just a personal experience. At least it’s not a bad beat post.

Best Regards to all and see you around,

Zephyr

No offense, but I got as far as "multitabling" and just skimmed the rest. You have no idea if you were a winning player at SnG's yet, let alone "branching out". Concentrate on one game (one table - one style of poker) at a time and see if you beat that. There are a wealth of subtleties to be observed at one table if you are concentrating. See if you can do, and beat, that.

IMHO, of course.

If he is playing 100 tournies a week and making $30 an hour I think it is safe to say he is a winner.

I was around ROI = 27% after 1500 SNG's. It's pretty safe to say that I was a winning player.

But the only real substance that the post had was that in my opinion SNG's are one of the most enjoyable forms of poker. Sure I could net more than $30/hr playing 8 tables of 2-4, but really, how much fun is that.

In my opinion the only contenders with SNG's are MTT's, and of course live NL, or live tourneys. At my local casino we have a good 10-20 dealers choice as well that can get quite rowdy! Only my opinion of course, others can probably make pretty good arguments for the limit cage, I mean ring.

Just a Ramble,

Zephyr

I know where you're coming from. I started as a sng player, got bored, played ring games and got bored with that. Back to the sng grind for me.

those '1 to 3-table' NL tourneys are the most enjoyable for me too. I play limit to finance my SNG addiction... SNG's are tough to figure out... I run over the game sometimes and then sometimes not win a hand the entire tourney. I went out last night after 43 hands, the best hand I saw was QT offsuit. SNG's are extra variant...

Love the SNG! I normally play 2 SNG's and one 2/4 ring game at the same time. I tend to grind out more of a profit at the 2/4 but the SNG's are a lot more fun (and still profitable) IMHO.
