Hi All

First let me state that I know little to nothing about Poker. (I am a Blackjack player but don`t hold that against me!)

Sometimes when visiting a casino, BJ conditions are not acceptable for a profitable game so I thought it was about time I tried to teach myself poker.

I recently bought my first poker book, Winning Low-Limit Hold' Em by Lee Jones.

I am looking for some recomendations of a number of books that I should study and read to give me the fundementals and the advanced knowledge to be a good player who can hold his own in a low limit hold` em games.

Thanks in adavance for any replies.

I think Jones is a good start. You probably don't need to read any of the other books aimed specifically at low-limit poker (Kreiger for example).

I would suggest Theory of Poker and Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players-21rst century edition.

I would follow these by John Feeny's "Inside the Poker Mind," Roy Cooke's "Real Poker: the Cooke Collection," and Bob Ciaffone's, "Improve Your Poker."

These would be a great start to a collection and will improve your game tremendously. After this core I would get the "Poker Essays" series by Mason, Brunson's "Super/System" and Caro's "Fundamental Secrets of Winning Poker."

Caro's "Book of Tells" is valuable, but you are much better off putting your focus on other aspects of the game first.

A lot of reading, but it will be well worth it,

Hi Paul

Thanks for the reply, as in BJ, im sure there many poker books out there that are a waste of money. In BJ there are many books that are complete and utter rubbish, they have no mathmatical basis and are complete voodoo.

The one thing lacking in the Jones book is a guide as to how much of a bankroll I should have at certain limit structured games? (to survive any negative fluctuations, something im used to as a BJ player)

I went to couple of casinos last week and observed the play at the low limit tables. The play was FAR worse than I thought it would be, they would call almost every hand!

The casino rakes at low-limit are quite heavy (% wise), are there any books that go into detail on how difficult this is to overcome?

Thanks again for the list and you reply.

Lee Jones doesn't talk about bankroll because it is not usually a considertation for low limit players. His book is aimed at beginners, starting off in the smallest games they can find, not professional card players who are playing in the highest limits they can handle.

Hi Bobby

Thanks for the reply, its probably not important as I have a greenchip bankroll for my BJ play so this should more than cover low-limit poker.

To a BJ player the Lee Jones book makes a lot of sense. You play good hands. You are making money by folding quickly when things don`t hit.

(for those who don`t know) In BJ we make money by hitting the bathroom or leaving the table in a negative count.

If you really want to get into the bankroll element you could check out Mason's "Gambling Theory and Other Topics."

The rule of thumb is 300 big bets for a winning player, but as much as 1000 if you have to live off it as well.

I know this isnt a 2+2 book, but pick up Championship Hold em by TJ Cloutier and Tom McEvoy. I feel it is well worth its $40 price tag.
