china IS west of North America. I'm leaving for china in a few days, and won't be coming back until april. I've bought SSH, and plan to read a lot on the plane. Does anybody know if CHina allows gambling? or poker? it is an american invention after all. I don't know how they regard gambling. DOes anyone know of anywhere to play? I will be around the Shanghai area without a car (mabye I can get a motorcycle).....hmmm that's a good idea......

How do you figure it is an american invention? Your thread couldn't be more ignorant or more wrong. Just an small part of "The History of Poker" is below.

The origin of Poker is widely disputed. There are as many possible birthplaces as there are variations of the game. The most popular belief is that it was invented by the Chinese around 900 A.D., possibly derived from the Chinese dominoes. On New Year's Eve, 969, the Emperor Mu-tsung is reported to have played "domino cards" with his wife.

Another theory calls on the French "poque". The French who settled New Orleans around 1480 played Poque, a card game involving bluffing and betting. This was stated to be the first use of a deck consisting of spades, diamonds, clubs, and hearts.

The history of poker in the United States has a bit more consistency. Poker traveled from New Orleans by steamboat up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The game then spread via wagon and train. Modifications such as stud poker, the draw, and the straight became popular, during the Civil War. European influence of poker ended when the joker was introduced as a wild card in 1875.

If I weren't really bored and writing a history paper, I wouldn't point this out.

There is legal gambling in Macao in Southern China. When I was there in 2003, there were ten casinos, but none of them had poker. (The casinos I saw only had Chinese games like Sic Bo, Pai Gow, and Fan Tan, where there's a huge pile of buttons on the table, then the dealer puts a cup over some of the buttons, and people bet on how many buttons are under the cup. Seriously.) As of right now, many Western gambling companies are in the process of opening casinos there (I think either Mirage or Caesar's already has opened one), so some of the newer casinos may offer Western games and possibly poker.

You might look for private games in the expat community - there were a lot in the Tokyo expat community.

Here are a few hints about Shanghai: you can't get a motorcycle as non-citizens aren't allowed to drive, even with an international driver's license. You won't need one anyway as you can find a taxi and 3 in the morning in a dark alley in the rain (and it's always raining). Gambling is illegal so you won't be able to go to any Casinos, but you may be able to find some expat games as there is a decent-sized expat community. Oh, don't forget to tell the taxi drivers to use the meters unless you are made of money. Just say "da biao." Good luck.

I have talked to some chinese players, there is actually a very large chinese poker forum:) They said poker is illegal but that it is still somewhat popular and that people play online. So be careful... or you could just go play some high stakes Mai Jong for souls ^^;;

China is East..ok..EAST!!!!

No, gambling is not allowed in China, but I'm sure if you try hard enough they're are enough underground places that will accomadate to your gambling needs.

Hold'em is not too popular in Shanghai or Hong Kong right now. They play more Chinese Poker or Show hand (No Limit that is). If you can play 7-card stud well enough, you will own Show-Hand, but mind you like any NL game there's huge swings.

Your best bet to is get access to a computer and just play online.

If they build a western casino in HK with poker there, I am moving to HK for good. There will be so much dead money, it'll be a gold mine. Ironic though when I think about it. My ancestors came to the West to dig for gold..and now I might back myself to dig for gold.
