I am getting an insane amount of pop-ups since I've started playing online and frequenting sites like this. What is the best remedy. I am currently running I hate popups and a toolbar with a blocker. I have also quit playing online for now. Any ideas? Thanx!

Go to downloads.com and get adaware by lavasoft and spybot search and destroy update them and run them and they will remove the spyware causing your popups.

Switch from IE to Mozilla:

Consider switching browser to Mozilla Firefox. It has a built in popup blocker which works very good. It also has alot of other great features like tabbed browsing.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

I would also recommend that you check your computes for spyware. Ad-aware is a free program that you can use for that.

You should also get all updates from Windows Update.

You don't need to switch browsers. Just get ad-aware and spybot as posted above. Run the update check on both of them and then run ad-aware and after it finishes run spybot.

Sure you don't need to switch browsers. All I can say is since I switched from Explorer to Firefox, my spybot and adbot runs have found very few problems. Coincedence?

You're best off getting Firefox, but failing that SP2 (which you should get anyway) contains a pop-up blocker.

I can't attest to it's effectiveness as I don't use IE, but when I did use IE the Google toolbar was a good enough pop up blocker for me.

Ad-aware and search&destroy have helped emmensely. I don't know about changing my browser; I don't handle change well. But if I need to I will. Thanks for all of your help.

Control -> Add / Remove Programs -> Uninstall Gain software.

I believe that's the correct method, otherwise you have to visit the Gain website and the uninstalling directions are hidden on there somewhere.

Standard answer for protection and prevention:

To remove suspected spyware/viruses

Perform an online virus scan.
Download, update, and run these tools:
Spybot Search & Destroy
Lavasoft Adaware
CWShredder
Repeat as necessary until clean.
If you still experience problems after doing these steps, download HijackThis

To protect against reinfection
download and use these:

Javacool's SpywareBlaster
Javacool's SpywareGuard
Malware-blocking HOSTS file
Good luck

I am guessing your read the security forum at techguy.com

They have been an immense help to me. One word of caution regarding hijackthis. If you don't know what you are doing you are much better off posting your hijackthis log at a place like the techguy security forum and letting an expert look it over. Otherwise you could delete something good.

One other thing. Most of the pop-up blockers you see advertised for free download are really spyware of one form or another. Many of them cause pop-ups.

Finally, most poker sites themselves are safe (pokerstars, UB, party etc), but any google search on internet gambling or poker will undoubtedly lead you to some very dangerous sites.
