View Full Version : More of me not understanding computers--how did my IP get blacklisted?

So I tried to connect to the twoplustwo IRC channel thing today, and discovered that I had been temporarily banned from a server because of a "blacklisted proxy."

I tried to do a little reading about this stuff, then realized that I did not have enough background to figure it out.

Does this sound like something that's a problem with my ISP getting itself listed with anti-spam folks, or does this sound like I've managed to configure my computer in some stupid and insecure way?

Thanks!

Not sure.

Are all computers on your network unable to access twoplustwo? If not, what OS's are the blocked ones running.

If running windows, you can check your connection by clicking START, RUN, and enter cmd in the box. Click OK.

You can then enter ping www.twoplustwo.com (http://www.twoplustwo.com) or tracert www.twoplustwo.com (http://www.twoplustwo.com).

Ping tests the connection, tracert prints out the route the computer takes to get to twoplustwo.

temporarily banned from a server because of a "blacklisted proxy."

If you are using a cable modem, you can turn off your modem, wait about a half an hour and then turn it back on. By that time you should have a new IP.

It sounds like someone was spamming the IRC channel. I'm just guessing though.

Try resetting your IP and connecting to the IRC server again.

Make sure it's different by going here:
http://www.whatismyip.com/

If that doesn't work, are you behind a router? In other words do you share your internet connection with any other computers in the apartment / house? To connect to EFnet I believe you need to forward port 113 to your local IP for ident.
