Maybe Im just a moron for not realizing this but it came as a suprise to me.

But many of the poker audiences you see on TV at final tables and such are staged actors getting paid!

I was at the Taj for the USPC and you could go be part of the audience for the "feature" table. Anyone could go and sit on the two side sections. I sat down there but after a while the TV prod guy asked me to sit in the main front section.

And I didnt think anything of it for a while. But after a while I noticed that everyone in the section knew eachother from the way we were talking. And it was totally weird since they were so racially eclectic and aged variant. I was thinking "how the hell am I the only one here who doesnt know everyone else?!"

I got even more curious when they announced howard lederer coming in and some guy was like "Howard Letterman, thats Patti Dukes brother or something"

heh, I was confused why someone who doesnt know who howard lederer would be into poker enough to sit there for hours under the hot lights, watching people fold and once in ten hands see someones hole cards at a showdown.

anyways later a lady tells me that they are all actors getting paid by the hour. I was like "damn holy crap, how many poker audiences are actors" She says most times the main section you see on TV are actors.

anyways I have no thoughts or feelings on it, Im just bored at work and thought Id post an intersting fact

Did you get paid for your services?

If the pay was decent I would think watching poker tournies would be cool.

I think that this is more the exception than the rule. I watched last year's final table of the World Poker Finals live. It was the middle of the day on a weekday and the place was totally packed with spectators. They even opened a 2nd ballroom just so people could watch the event "live" on tv without sound. The 2nd ballroom was about 75% full, and every seat in the stands was occupied. So, especially now, I think the vast majority of televised poker tournaments have fans, not actors, in the seats. It wouldn't surprise me if they actually started charging admission in the future.

Man, fake hands (according to Paul Phillips) and now fake audiences?

Geez, maybe Brunson died a few years ago and was replaced by a 300 pound pokerbot /images/graemlins/grin.gif

It should be "uneducated morons" since you pluralized throughout the sentence. When you're guilty of your own attacks, you kind of look like a jack-hole.

I tried to watch the final table at the Taj tournament a few weeks ago. I lasted about 5 minutes before the boredom set in. Without seeing holecards or a showdown, it's real boring. Plus, if you're not close enough to hear the banter... Snoozeville.

But good post, I thought it was interesting.

Hi Leo,

I don't remember which interviewee it was, but one of the History Channel's History of Poker sources put it best: "Before hole card cams, watching poker was like watching bears hibernate and smoke."

I hope you realize how utterly stupid you just made yourself look. In case you don't, let me rewrite the sentence the way you suggested so you can read it.

You don't have much common sense or a very good grasp on the English language I take it. I stand by my statement which is 100% correct.

And Cris, how did I get into another grammar dispute? Strange.

If you honestly think that's a grammatically correct sentence, you're either a) retarded or b) english is your third or fourth language. If neither of those are true, well, I don't know what to say. You should probably just stop posting on this thread before you make yourself look stupider than you already have.

It's 100% correct because you misinterpret instructions. Apparently you need someone to hold your hand and tell you what should be replaced. Simply giving you the correct information isn't enough. I never told you what info to edit out.

If you pluralize "an uneducated morons" it becomes "uneducated morons". How ironic.

challenger84

So it's option a) then. I'll take that as my cue to be done with this thread. Next.

If a moron can correct your grammar, it doesn't bode well for your abilities. I guess you should take the lessons where you can.

Have a wonderful night. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

This is a classic half-correction. The correct sentence would read:

Some people also like taking two seconds to proofread their posts so they don't look like uneducated morons.

"People," "their," "they," "morons." All plural. And no, those weren't complete sentences. And yes, nit-picking grammar is dangerous.

To bwana ... why are you in an online grammatical debate again? *shrugs* I dunno. Does your house have no brick walls against which you can bang your head? /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Why would this make you a moron? There's no particular reason you should have suspected that some of the shows were paying people to be audience members.

BTW, most of the food you see in TV commercials isn't real food either. For example, when you see someone pouring milk over breakfast cereal, they're actually pouring dilute white glue. As it turns out, real milk appears blue on film.

Still want to take everything you see on TV as "truth?" /images/graemlins/smile.gif

From this month's FHM magazine:

Much of the crowd reaction for the TV show is pre taped and inspired by offers of freebies.

That's pretty cool. Makes sense though, you're right, action in any event every 10-15 mins makes it a little tough to keep an audience awake! How many times have you been watching an afternoon regular season baseball game on TV when they pan to someone in the stands sound asleep! HA!

Bwana - Stop trying to reason with the unreasonable.
Challenger - You're clueless, shut up.

I live in LA, in fact my friends all call me "Hollywood Johnny" and this is not surprising to me, because most TV Game Show audiences are paid actors.

If you go to Hollywood, you will find people giving away "Free Tickets" to TV tapings, the funny thing is, if you are a local, and know where to look you can get paid to sit and watch those same shows.

It sounds like a dream job, but its usually pretty boring - it often takes 3+ hours to shoot a half hour show - I can't imagine how long some of those poker games actually go, considering we only see a fraction of the hands. And the pay isn't that good. It varies from about $6 / hour up to about $10.

But, if you are a struggling actor, $10 an hour, and a chance to schmooze with TV production crews is a nice gig.

I imagine in Vegas it is harder to find actors, so there are more "real people" in the audience - that is, people who are actually interested in the event.
