View Full Version : How Stupid is my friend?

My friend emailed me this hand, and we disagree vehemently about his turn play. He didn't have a great read but thought that the players were relatively, though not super, tight. Thoughts? (forgot to add, he "accidentally" hit RAISE preflop. Ignore that stupid play for now)

Party Poker 5/10 Hold'em (10 handed)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with 6/images/graemlins/spade.gif, T/images/graemlins/club.gif.
UTG folds, UTG+1 calls, UTG+2 folds, Hero raises, MP2 folds, MP3 folds, CO calls, Button calls, SB folds, BB folds, UTG+1 calls.

Flop: (9.40 SB) 6/images/graemlins/heart.gif, 3/images/graemlins/club.gif, T/images/graemlins/spade.gif (4 players)

he should bet the turn.

His turn play is atrocious--the initial check sucks, and once it's bet, not check-raising is criminal.

What scale are we using to measure how stupid this is? I need context to properly answer your question.

By the way, we can't really "ignore" the raise preflop, since button's range of hands is those he's coldcalling an MP raise with.

Why did you put "accidentally" in quotes? Is there some nonzero chance your friend raised preflop on purpose?

I might go for a check-raise on the turn, but I can see betting it as well. Check-calling seems like a terrible option.

I'm giving him a stupidity ratio of about 13.2 : 1.7, where the first number is his stupidity and the second number the maximum stupidity associated with still sentient beings.

See, when I was reading the action I thought I was going to write "FPS" but he didn't even do that on the turn...

He raised preflop. He hit check, and then again hit call on the turn. That's a lot of accidents.

What was his reasoning for check/calling the turn?

mike, I'd much rather c/r a J or somesuch here than a card so likely to have hit a pfr.

Let's out it this way: if your friend, a rock, and a slightly retarded chimpanzee were on Jeopardy, I'd put my money on the chimp. Followed by the rock.

EXACTLY, that's my point!!! He insists that check calling is the PROPER play at the turn. I wanted to punch him. He claims he was worried about K-10 or a set, or even JQ. My friend is a blithering idiot. I put accidentally in quotes because he claims that he did it accidentally, and I do believe him.

I bet the turn. As was said before, when you hit check (which was NOT an accident) if you don't check raise, I think you should have to return any money you win to the other players.

Best part of all, the river was a SIX. He filled up. One of the guys playing him asked if he was psychic.

Ask your friend to play on his account. When you get the password, take all of the money out of the account. Change the password. Deal with the consequences.

I think I'm DQ'ed for failing to spell "put" properly.

I guess that makes sense, although an argument could be made that the K is as much a scary card for a pf raiser. I think I might lean more towards betting the turn if up against average players, and checking to aggressive ones.

Don't worry about that. Your post is ridiculously funny. But I bet on the rock because it wouldn't answer wrong to as many questions as his friend or the chimp.

Just curious, what did CO and button have?

One had QKs, the other QTo

I had like six different responses to this thread worked up, ranging from hanging my head in shame to sarcasm involving how since he got called on the flop, he's gotta be up against, at the worst, top set, and should check-fold the turn. I mean, we've all read Lee Jones, haven't we?

And for the Jeopardy question... obviously, the rock wins. The chimp doesn't have the capacities to answer in the form of a question.

Plus, the rock would only answer if it had the nuts. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

How Stupid is my friend? 9.

I don't have any clue what he is trying to accomplish on the turn. If he either bet, or checkraised, I don't think you could argue with his play. Check/calling, gets -2 on a scale of 1 - 10.
