I have been asked if I wanted to put some money in the dealers jar while I was having my W2G filled out, but I have never been asked to tip the floor.

BTW, I do not add to the dealer jar if the tournament flyer says a certain percentage (usually 3%) of the prize money is given to the dealers. For example in a $200 + $25 tourney the $25 goes to the house, $194 goes to the prize fund and $6 goes to the dealers. As far as I'm concerned the dealers are covered and the floor gets a weekly salary to walk around in a suit, BS, and settle occasional squabbles. The floor is paid well enough in my opinion.

I tried tipping the floor a couple times in Vegas and was told that they're not allowed to accept tips. Of course, the rules are different at different casinos.

yea I had to cover the floor last week for my regular shift boss, while he was out fishing. Got paid a whopping $133.00.

Oh yea and now gotta spend $15.00 on dry cleaning, $8.00 on a shoe shine. So after taxes and all I guess I lost $50-80 bucks working for him rather than deal.

My only point is just cause they wear a suit doesnt mean they get the big bucks. Also it is true that at some places they are not allowed to accept tokes.

As for the original poster question: In some houses the tournament director gets a % of the dealer tokes. Just ask them. If not, ask them if they can accept tokes if you wish to toke them. Even if it's only $20.00 it is always appreciated.

Just for a bit of information. In the larger, well known tournaments such as the WPO, WSOP, etc, the 3% that is advertised as being witheld for dealers/staff generally gets chopped up with floor people, tournament directors etc. Generally in the area of 60-75% for the dealers depending on the house and event. So the remaining 25%-40% of that amount goes to the various staff including the tournament directors. Just ask and act accordingly to how your heart desires.

That begs the question "why work the floor then?"

To make a day's pay on slow days, when twice as many dealers as needed are scheduled.

To get away from whining, card-throwing, ashtraty-throwing, grumbling, cursing, card-ripping, smelly, make-the-dealer-stretch-all-the-way-across-the-table-to-reach-my-bet players!

(The folks I mention above are a VERY small minority, but you still have to put up with them every day.)

To get into casino management, moving higher and higher, and maybe, some day, escaping the poker room.

But mostly, to save your back and your wrists.

If a floor is 'taking care of you' in other
ways (helpful advice, and so forth) then
a tip on a big win is good for business.

I have only tipped floor persons twice in
my past, but felt it was not only the right
thing to do but also to my benifit.

Tips are always appreciated but never expected. If the floor goes out of his way to help, sure. Some rooms don't allow tipping the floor. When in doubt, ask.

Well it just changed at the shoe. A memo came down the pike yesterday I guess. Poker room floor staff can no longer recieve tips from customers. Now I am even more glad I turned down that offer. Our relief floor man wants to go back to dealing(he works 2 days, 2 swing floor shifts), I told Kenny the poker room manager Monday in fact. No thanks, I dont want to take a cut in pay. But thanks for offering. LOL lucky me.

Now I wonder what Harrahs will do to screw up a good thing even more. I guess it's time to think about the best time to go back to California. Too bad. There just aint many rooms as good as the Horseshoe to work.
