1-2 Pot limit on UB.

I open raise to $5 with 88, get called by small blind and middle position player.

$15 in pot and flop is: Ad Jd 8h

Both players check to me and I bet $7.50 with my three 8s. Both players smooth call.

Turn is 10c making board: A J 8 10

Both players again check to me, I bet $30, only small blind calls.

River is 9 making board: A J 8 10 9 no flush possible.

Small blind bets out $65. I think, put him on AQ and fold my set.

Small blind seems to be a solid player. He later claims to have had AK.

This is a fairly easy fold. Though if he was a good player, he didn't have AK.

I would certainly bet the max on the turn, btw. You're probably ahead, and you want to make those draws if they're out there pay as much as possible.

Maybe he did, maybe not.

Still, if he had it, it was as much a bluff as if he'd held 23o, since he's only getting called by hands that beat AK or 23.

Either he had the straight, or he bluffed. You'll never know. Still, a bluff here on his part isn't bad, since he can figure you can't have a 7, and you often won't have a Q. If you think he's capable of bluffing here, then you might need to call sometimes in the future.

Coach,

I saw the hand. Your opponent said, "AK i take it". I beleive he should have said, "AK i take it?" meaning he assumed you had AK after your comment. And you definately made the right move.
