I don't get it, he had a 6 year span in which he didn't play.....

Off the top of my head:

Norm Cash in 1961.

Alberte Belle the year he had 100 extra base hits.

He played in the Pacific Coast League(PCL) from 1924-27 after his arm "went dead" as a pitcher. He returned to the league as an outfielder in 1928 as a NY Giant.

Wow, didn't realize Albert put up those kind of numbers.

Wally Berger, 1930.

.317/.375/.614, 38 HR's, 119 RBI.

How insane is 38 bombs when you're playing half of your games in Braves Field? Second place on the team in home runs in 1930 was Buster Chatham with five.

Not bad for a rookie.

Geez. How can you not say Roger Maris in 1961 when he broke you know who's single season homerun record while not on steroids.

That I can personally remember, Don Mattingly 1985-1986.

Joe Jackson
1920 .382 BA, 121 rbi, 218 hits, 42 doubles, 20 triples, 105 runs, .444 obp, .589 slug, only 14 strikeouts in context of the questions and rumors concerning the 1919 world series (not that he has very emotionally fragile or even that he fully understood what was happening, but it was still a burden and distraction).

2000 Todd helton (I am biased)

138 runs 216 hits 59 doubles 42 HRs 147 rbi 103 walks .372 BA .463 OBP .698 SLG

1994 Frank Thomas, in 113 games
106 runs 34 doubles 38 HRs 101 rbi 109 walks .353 BA .487 OBP .729 SLG

Dwight Gooden 1985

Jose Canseco 1st ever 40/40 season

Norm Cash, another non-HOFer, had a better year the same year.

It's not as good as some of the other's mentioned, but Jim Rice's 406 total bases in '78 at least makes the list.

1994 Frank Thomas, in 113 games
106 runs 34 doubles 38 HRs 101 rbi 109 walks .353 BA .487 OBP .729 SLG

That's cheating. Frank Thomas will be a HOFer (and Helton probably will be too).

Alberte Belle the year he had 100 extra base hits.

That was '95. You could argue that his numbers in the strike shortened '94 season were even more impressive.

'94: .357 BA .438 OBP .714 SLG 1.152 OPS
'95: .317 BA .401 OBP .690 SLG 1.091 OPS

Maybe Guidry's 1978 year too. 25-3, 1.74, 248K, 9 ShO. And he won a game some of you may remember. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

You don't have to be sorry I love the Yankee's. Don't be fooled by the Roberto Clemente slurpee cup picture.

I was going to mention Guidry, but the question specified hitter. Guidry was a good hitter. Not that good though. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm a fair card reader, but obviously not a very good word reader.

actually, I specified "hitter" to eliminate Guidry and McClain from discussion.
