Having teethed myself on varying levels of Internet cash, SNG & multi-table games and played home games all with consistent success I decided to venture to my local casino for their weekly hold em multi-table (TH'E PL/buy in £10/ rebuys for first 2 hours/54 in tourney/1st prize £900-£1200(loads of rebuys....super loose first 2 hours)).
Anyway I played pretty tight and mopped up when I got a good hand, got lucky a couple of times and ended up with around 15k at the end of the re-buy time. I decided that as everyone else had tightened up and I was table leader I should raise my own aggression and ended up busting 5k of my stack on AK suited (made top pair) against trip tens (he was short and I figured he'd need a monster to call third "proper" tourney hand...he did, I lost. Sh1t happens.
I sat patiently for 2-3 rounds and nicked a couple of small pots but played a lot more tightly. By now blinds were 1k each, seven handed and I had about 8k left, blinds due to go up to 1500 each in next 5-10 mins, so I decided I needed to make a move at some point.
I was dealt A2H UTG and raised 2k figuring my hour of tight play had earnt me bluffing rights on an increasingly tight table.I got called by some guy with about 50% more than me. Flop was rainbow 864 and I figured that was unlikely to help him much (he wouldnt call my first raise with 5 7 I figured) unless he had high pair in which case fine if I bluffed into a monster, so I raised all in 4.3k into 6-7k pot.
He called straight away so I knew I was beat BUT....and herein lies my question, he turned his cards over to reveal A4C...he had called with bottom pair.
I've replayed the hand a few times and given that in over 3.5 hours this was my first BIG play (of which 1 hour was at that table with my conquerer),and I had previously shown no less than group 1 hands I am trying to work out why he called. I doubt I gave off a tell and even if I did its hard to think he could have sussed my game based on that one hand alone. I cannot help but think he made a mistake and it worked out right for him but I am very keen to hear other 2+2ers persective.....was my rationale right even though it went wrong, was this a sound play, was he wrong to call etc.
I came 24th out of 54 with no rebuys first time so I'm pretty happy overall but I would greatly appreciate your comments.

You are assumming he is on a certain level of playing by being able to put you on a hand, or group of hands. Many lower skilled players play at an unsophisticated level of poker. They lack the ability of keen observation during the game. Even players that are capable of basic reads can get easily blinded when they have large stacks. Some feel it their business to now attempt knockouts against the field, any an any ace hand can easily fall into this category. On your steal attempt, you dangerously assummed the other players would show you respect do to your tight play. Some players don't classify their opponents as rocks, loose, weak, or what have you.
