I love it when Max says he can beat anyone on campus, despite the presence of 2 decent 2+2ers and a very good mid-limit player from UPF on campus. We're gonna challenge him to a series of sit n gos soon:

I also wonder how a babyfaced 18 yearold freshman managed to play at foxwoods w/o a fake ID. I've been carded there twice.

The river card is turned - another nine. Four of a kind - a miracle only possible in a sinless world.

A one in 46 shot. wow.

So sharing a birthday must be irrefutable proof that cherubim grace our weary world.

Actually, he has boat outs, too.. So it's not that big of a miracle. Just goes to show you the level of sophistication of the players on campus. I really need to get out and play in more of these games.

The flop is a King, nine and seven, all spades. Now with three nines, he triples the bet, not knowing that the only hand that can beat him, an ace high flush,

[/ QUOTE ] Or KK.

This article sucks.

Anyone else find it funny that a Catholic Church sponsored a multitable poker tournament for cash prizes?

Why is it hypocrisy? Churches, among other non-profit organziations run bingos, monte carlo nights, etc... Is there a commandment that says "Thou shalt not gamble"?

Proverbs 28:22
He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.

I guess its not directly stated, but thats the best I could find... guess its the whole greed thing

I don't think it is quite that greedy if the rake is going to charity. Assuming it was going to charity.

Tex said he tries to read his opponent’s mannerisms, such as if someone who is loud suddenly gets quiet, or vice versa, to gain an edge.

“You pull in everything you know about the cards, the bet and that person and base your decision on that,” he said.

To keep his opponent from doing the same to him, he said he uses reverse psychology.

“When you have a hand, you don’t want to seem like you have a hand and bet passively,” he said, “and when you don’t have a hand, you want to bluff the pot real hard so they think you do.”

[/ QUOTE ]
Wow I bet that's hard to pick up on...

Haberstroh and Young speak of a classmate they call “The Shark” as if he were the Dali Lama. “The Shark” is Max Bloom, a wiry freshman from Connecticut who may be the Bobby Fischer of Hold ‘Em.
...
“Online, you look for the players who immediately buy back in because you know they don’t care about throwing their money away,” he said.
....

[/ QUOTE ]

What? How does someone rebuying immediately automatically make them a bad player? I thought good players want lots of chips in front of them too. I must suck.

[ QUOTE ]
Max, who was taught by his dad, a semi-professional card player, said he made over $6,000 playing online and at the Foxwoods casino in Mashantucket, Conn. this summer.
...
He has lost - sometimes as much as $1,000 - but only when he loses in the beginning and tries to “chase down losses,” he said.

[/ QUOTE ]
How does someone who makes $6000 in three months sometimes manage to lose $1000 in a session? Either major tilt or playing above their BR/skill or else he is a very small winner at middle limits. What a shark.

“It’s actively soliciting kids to gamble, and in some states, that may be illegal,” Whyte said. “You wouldn’t have a college drinking or smoking championship. Colleges are much more focused on things like drug abuse, date rape and binge drinking. Gambling is seen as a victimless crime at best.”

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe because it is victimless, you dolt.
