Define matter.
Will they help some undecided voters choose a candidate? Maybe.
Will they change the outcome of the race? No.

Presidential debates may have been the late, decisive event which allowed or ensured the the elections of Presidents Kennedy, Carter, Reagan, and Bush (2000).

Bush was down 7 or 8 pts. going into the debate vs. Gore and I believe it changed the outcome last time.

Dynasty and Nepa:
You both have valid points, but these debates are not going to be like other previous debates.
Due largely to Gore "invading W's space" at the last debate, a number of rules have been put in to place for this election'd debates.
Neither candidate can address the other candidate, ask questions of the candidate, sigh, etc.
Unfortunately, I think these debates will be a series of canned prepared mini speeches rather than a true debate.
I guess well find out in 10 min if this thing matters or not. Good luck to President Bush and Senator Kerry. I have a gut feeling that the favorite Bush is going to run away with this thing.
