Should I have gotten away from the Aces here?

Could I have gotten away from the hand on the flop? When my opponent raised me $20 on the flop I knew there was probably a good chance he had me beat, but I thought he could have AK and I only had $12 left at that point. Could I have gotten away from this or was it an automatic call?
