Is it worth it to re-buy into a tournament?.....

Today for instance i played 200 entry fee NLHE at the Tropicana with a re-buy if you had under 500$ worth of chips. 2 guys next to me did a re-buy after the first hand after they folded. Being this was my first tournament I decided that my odds of winning were weak anyway so why double the mistake. (Out of 58 players in the tourney there were 48 rebuys). I finished in the mid 30's i guestimated.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of rebuying?

Any input would be appreciated.

Certainly there is no benefit if you have chips. You should only consider it when you are out or almost out of chips.

Basically, if the tournament is worth your while EV wise then it gets even better when others are rebuying; unless the chips are currently dis-proportionately distributed to the better players.

Otherwise, 2+2 has some pretty good stuff on this issue, and I'd bet its in their new tournament book as well.
