The bad beat jackpot is 100k. 50/25/25 split.

Bad MP player limps. Decent SB calls. I raise 99 from the BB.
Flop is 994.

SB checks.
Now, a check here looks very stange, so I usually bet and check the turn.
Should I check here because of the huge jackpot? I have no idea what my opponets hold.

I might check, but like you said it looks weird. You can hope that he calls it, but if he has crap, you wont get a call. I say check and give him a free card to make two pair of something with an ace. After the turn, if he checks, you should bet.

In my not so expert opinion, it has got to be a -EV play NOT to give a free card. What's the worse that can happen... he has 8's and hits running quads?

Hey Brick,

You need to check this anyway. You have all the good cards right now. Other player might pick up a flush draw if you check or at least he may bluff. As far as JP goes, Opponent might have 78s or TJs (or 8Ts) and pick up a straight flush draw. Hell bad player may pick up a 5 and think one pair is best. Some players will pay the whole way though and it is best to bet, but I think a check will usually pay higher dividends. obviously bet the turn no matter what. Nobody will give you any credit after checking the flop as a raiser and will call w/ anything.

Hi Brick,

I'll only comment on the jackpot part as the rest of the hand will play differently against different opponents.

Let's aasume you are playing in a jackpot game where both cards must play and Aces full of Jacks must be beaten by 4 of a kind or better, and there is a raise and a reraise preflop and opponents who may be new to the casino and unaware of jackpots. You hold AK and the flop comes A-A-A.

In this scenario with a Jackpot at 100K in a 10-20 game, then I would check behind all the way or call a bet and demand to see my opponents cards. I would not want to take even the slightest chance that an opponent gets a brainfart and folds. I'll chance an extra $100 or so for a very reasonable shot at 25K. In your situation, however, I wouldn't worry about the longshot potential of someone catching running Quads. Just play as you see fit to win the biggest pot possible.

You have to check here, jackpot or not. If you raise, and the board pairs on the flop, they will assume that you have big cards and missed the flop. However, if you bet and they have nothing and are conservative players, you have nothing to gain by betting and everything to lose. When you flop the absolute nuts, you want other players to catch a hand so that they can bet into you. I think that the best card that you could have hit the turn (not just for jackpot, but for regular play) would be an ace because most players are so enamored with a pair of aces that they will ignore the fact that you might have quads. You are unlikely to get a player calling you on the flop with ace-4 because they will probably put you on an overpair if you come out firing on a flop like that. I say check and let them catch up.
