As I spend more time looking at this, I think it was more luck than good play that got me through. I made a couple of well timed bluffs, but there were a couple hands where I caught a pair on the Turn when everyone checked a paired flop. Also, I doubled up on cheekss about 4 times, but I was usually the favorite going in, or on the short end of a coin flip. (44 vs K9o, AJo vs TT, A9o vs K6s).

Do you guys think I played alright overall, or should I have protected my chip lead when I had it (by tightening up)? The thing that worries me is the high variance of my stack size.

This looked good to me, nothing out of line, good steals... The one hand I would have played differently was the Ac5c hand. With no draws and no pairs on the flop, I might have bet out, as you did, but I think folding to the river bet is probably going to be the +EV move. I would think after he calls the flop bet that he at least has a pair, 7's maybe. 4th pair isn't something I'd be comfortable calling with.

Even with good cards, you have to get lucky. You played good cards and didn't get unlucky, and took appropriate advantage of your opponents' tendencies when you didn't have good cards.

Thanks for the reply. As for the Ac5c hand, your right. I couldn't beat anything but an all out bluff, but I don't really think he would have tried that.

Another hand I think I should have played but folded was Kd5d. I would have played it, but I had another tourney going at the same time (which I rarely do). I coincidentally had K5o on the other table and went to fold it, but the first table popped up at the last second and so I folded the suited hand by mistake.

I would have folded with A5 on the river but also I think I would have slowplayed AA to get more value. In that hand, your opponent is Cheeks who seems to have a good possibility to double you up. I would smooth call preflop and hope for action post flop.

Sure you give him a chance to catch really well and knock you out, but if you're playing for first I would aim to double up this hand, not just get blinds.
