I've read WLLH (SSH and TOP are on their way), and am still a little bit confused about the concept of betting for value.

Party Poker 0.50/1 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 3/images/graemlins/heart.gif, A/images/graemlins/heart.gif.
UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, MP1 calls, MP2 calls, MP3 folds, CO folds, Button calls, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: (5 SB) 8/images/graemlins/spade.gif, 5/images/graemlins/heart.gif, 7/images/graemlins/heart.gif (5 players)
Hero bets, BB folds, MP1 calls, MP2 calls, Button calls.

Nut flush draw. I'd figure I'd lead, hoping (slim chance) that I take it down here, and since I'm about 4:1 to make the flush with 4 players to act behind me, is this considered a bet for value?

Turn: (4.50 BB) 3/images/graemlins/spade.gif (4 players)
Hero bets, MP1 folds, MP2 calls, Button calls.

No one showed any aggression on the flop so I figured I'd fire another shot, still hoping for the flush because the pair of 3's are probably no good...

River: (7.50 BB) 8/images/graemlins/club.gif (3 players)
Hero checks, MP2 bets, Button folds, Hero calls.

Missed my flush, the board pairs, maybe I should have laid it down here?

Final Pot: 9.50 BB

check the turn. check-fold the river.

you are roughly 2:1 to make the flush by the river. that's why you want to put money in the pot on the flop, but not the turn when your odds are much less with one card to come.

Yeah eventhough you caught your kicker you would like a free card or only have to pay one bet to see the river against 3 opponents.

Hmm... is there some reason to believe his A3 outs are no good here? There is a straight draw on the board, but there was no aggression on the flop to indicate a strong draw to it...

Seems like added to his flush outs that a bet would be appropriate on the turn...

Well his 3 is probably no good, but his A probably is

I would bet the turn and check/ fold the river.

What's the taint on the set?

I'd think you played the hand fine.

If you don't have the best hand on the turn, your pot equity is very high against 3 opponents. You have between 8 and 14 outs (probably all 14 are clean) to the best hand if you're behind.
