when I make this play (and I make it more than anyone), I generally like to be sure I have the best hand. there's clearly a chance he has a 6, and maybe a small chance he has QT, or maybe even AT or KT.

spicyF made a post a little while ago on the Mid/High forum about checkraising the river to save bets, you might try a search for it, pretty interesting.
I would only try to do this against a player that is aggressive enough to bet the river with a 9 and call a c/r (fortunately for us, most players that bet the river will always call a c/r)...I would have to know that my opponent would bet with a worse hand cuz it sucks if it gets checked through when you could have just bet...

i've made several responses on river play to some posts that are very similiar to spicy's thread, but everybody seems to ignore me.

the board pairing the 6 will have 2 effects on your opponent's play
1) he has a 6 and could possibly 3-bet you
2) he does not have a 6 and will just call you or fold
the main concern is, how do you know he'll bet when all he's been doing is calling? and how often will he fold a hand that you beat or call with a hand that beats you? etc etc etc
i personally just bet, but sometimes i use this line too against players who love to bet when checked to.
The main reason I've started doing this more often is because I noticed that you can get busted draws to take a stab at the pot if you show some weakness on the river. And most Party players refuse to fold once they've put money in the por. It's a lot of fun to watch J high call a river check-raise.

If this is the case and the reason why you made the checkraise then usually a checkraise is NOT going to get paid off, making this play pointless.

I actually do not see this that often. I must be playing the wrong tables. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif
I'm not always expecting to get called (but it is fun), and I usually don't. But you still gain an extra bet pretty often since they would just fold to the river bet anyway with a draw that they missed.
I think you lose a bet from 88/77 more often.
I dont think the river 6 changes much btw as you can just fold to the 3bet. I prefer to know that my opponent is aggr or have him on a slim range of hands when I make this play.

there's also the cases where you're actually checkraising with a loser.
