Yes you should have bet the flop.

If you get raised I would call and then check/fold the turn if you don't improve or pick up another card on your flush or straight draws.

With 5 other players in with you, you can not bet this flop with any kind of safety. It's a rarity that nobody would already have you beat.

If you do bet and get raised, you must fold right there. Five players, somebody already has you behind.

Third pair and a couple backdoor draws would be an easy check-fold if the pot weren't so big. In any case, even if we do have the best hand, betting here does little to protect it: gut shots, bottom pair, etc., all have the odds to call along.

I think the right strategy here (on the flop) is check planning to fold to a bet and a raise, and planning to raise a late position bettor if we are first to act. If I am last to act after a bet and some callers, I have just enough to take a look at the turn. If there are more left to act behind me, it depends on how likely I think a check-raise is, but I'm leaning toward folding.

If I am now not heads up with the bettor, I'd fold the turn unimproved. Heads up, I check-call it down.

Even after it is checked around, I continue to doubt you have the best hand. Still, you probably have to bet the turn. On the river, I think that the risk of a raise combined with the lack of worse hands which will call (and the fact that I STILL think we are likely behind to Ax or Qx, if not better) make this a check-call.
