I guess I was just getting lucky with the 50s initially, maybe I need to move back down. I'm really struggling with big stack play, getting many more 3rds-6ths than I am used to. Half the time I think I'm not stealing enough, but then when I do steal with a marginal hand, people wake up with something. Please critique this bubble play, particularly tell me if you thnk I missed opportunities to steal, or if I should have played the hands where I took action differently. I recommend using the downloadable Party Poker HH Replayer (http://teamfu.freeshell.org/replayer.html).

Given that ericindc98 won numerous blinds uncontested and eventually the tournament, I'm beginning to doubt my strategy of 3xBB when stack larger than 10xBB, and pushing when under. It makes me think maybe I should be raising small more often from steal position, then stealing post-flop if checked to. I'd probably just get stop-n-go'd to death if I tried that though. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

I went back and looked at who was stealing and how often and how successful they were. In 27 hands:

jake3773 - 0 - 0 (I think he was disconnected some of the time)

On further reflection, that's actually more raises from me than I thought I had made. My impression of myself and the game state was that every pot was being raised before I could get in it, and that I was being tighter than everyone else. We humans are really good at warping perception to coincide with our self-pity. Now I'm beginning to think maybe my stealign isn't the problem. It was just bad luck that I didn't win any showdowns in the 5 hands I raised.

(Plus the J2 push was reckless and stupid. I thought he would fold at least 75% of the time, but in retrospect, he was too loose to try this.)

954006027 - Player dependant, I bet either the flop or the turn (but definitely one of them no matter who I'm against).
954015707 - This is an opponent dependant call here; against this opponent, I call and pot any flop. This is a good situation where you want to defend your blinds.
954037999 - Totally unnecessary push. But you knew that.

Other than that, you played fine; you just had a bad run of cards. It happens.

I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that being aggressive and winning blinds does not win tournaments. You need to not only pick up blinds, but get called sometimes, and get lucky enough to win a showdown or two or three. Picking up 7 blinds but losing 2 all-ins won't fly.

If you have a moment, please survey this bubble play and tell me what I did wrong. In particular:
1) Should I have called with the J8s or the K7s?
2) Should I have stabbed at the flop with my 87 gutshot?
3) Should I have taken a different line with the JJ or the 88 in an attempt to extract more value?

965242591 - I call but only because I'm second in chips and have a big lead over #3. If I was the chip leader I would fold because I want to keep the shortstack around, but since I'm second, J8s wins often enough and I have a big enough lead over #2 that I'm willing to take the risk.

Ok, thanks for the responses. I can't really disagree with any of it, although pushing with Q5o seems an awful lot like my gratuitous Jxs push from the earlier-posted tournament.

Actually, it's a lot different for several reasons.

1) You have the BB covered
2) It's a better hand
3) This BB was playing pretty tight.

Rather than a hand by hand critique, it might be more helpful to know what an outsider thinks of your overall play instead... so here are my criticisms:

1. It seems like you get lost a bit after the flop. There were only a few post-flop plays, but your fold of the suited 10 from the BB to a minimum raise by ericindc confirmed the suspicion I had after watching you fail to take the first pot (your JT against his ace) that you dont like playing after the flop. This is probably the result of playing mostly SNGs, where post flop play is more rare than in live games. You might want to play a little live NLHE to improve your postflop play. It will give you more confidence when you need to make critical decisions and bold moves after the flop in the late stages of SNGs.

2. I think I would have been looking to steal the BB from the guy on your right more often (when you were UTG).

3. It seems like you might not be considering the chip stack proportions enough when making preflop decisions. The mistake with the Jack from the SB was bad more because of the shortstack's chip count and the fact that he was getting ready to play the blinds than because of your values. Similarly, you had a good chip count dependent steal opportunity from the button a few hands before (you only had 7-3 I think) where you were much less likely to get called.

Just my thoughts based on this very limited observation.

I think Irieguy is dead-on here. You should consider playing some cash games, to develop your post-flop skills. That will also give you the confidence to play some other kinds of situations than those you're choosing. A lot of endgame and/or short-stacked SNG strategy has to do with knowing which hands tend to run well hot-and-cold in when you're called on a steal raise. A hand like 98s or JTo is a better stealing hand than Q5 or J3, both because they offer more kinds of outs, and because they're less likely to be dominated. From what I saw, you're missing some good opportunities with these kinds of hands. But if you're going to play them, you need to know how to play them well post-flop.

For example, when you flop a draw with these kinds of hands, it's better to be the aggressor. This gives you three advantages over checking/calling: (1) you can often take a free turn or river card if you need to; (2) you can win if your opponent folds; or, (3) you'll often win a bigger pot when you hit your draw, because an opponent is less likely to put you on the made draw.

But ... obviously, when you make an aggressive flop bet and your opponent comes over the top all-in, you don't want to be calling all-in with a draw unless you can afford to lose the pot and still have a decent stack to play. When you play defense with a draw, you lose the semi-bluff equity, and that's a lot of your net equity for the hand.

Again, all of these are things you can practice better by playing cash games. The stacks are deeper, and you're not in a lose-a-pot-and-you're-gone situation, so you get more opportunities to see situations and develop your skills.

To some extent, I agree that Irieguy is dead-on regarding me not wanting to play post-flop, but only with huge blinds. I love to play post-flop during level 1-3, in fact, I limp more than most would recommend, because I like so much to see flops. But when the blinds are 200/400 and every min-bet takes a massive chunk of your stack, yeah, I hate it. Ring game play won't address this issue.

Knowing my opponents will call down with any peice of the board is terrifying. I will still semi-bluff OESD sometimes, but the two overs made me chicken out. (Had the flop been 98x instead of KQx, it would have been easier for me). But it was still a mistake that I will look out for in the future.

You nkow what might make me feel better? Finding out the probabilities invoved - if my opponent holds two unpaired cards XY, what's the likelihood of any given flop to have hit them? Then change the problem to un-equally weighted values for X and Y (i.e. Much more likely AKT hit a preoflop raiser than J24).
