The Washington Post is reporting (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24635-2004Sep15.html) that the forged CBS memos bore markings showing they had been faxed to CBS News from a Kinko's in Abilene, TX. There is suspicion that retired Texas National Guard officer Bill Burkett is the source of the documents. Burkett lives 21 miles away in Baird, TX and was interviewed by CBS News producer Mary Mapes this summer. Burkett has made several accusations about Bush's National Guard service.

In another Washington Post article, Dan Rather comments on the controversey (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24633-2004Sep15.html). Among Rather's comments is this incredible quote:

[ QUOTE ]
"If the documents are not what we were led to believe, I'd like to break that story. Any time I'm wrong, I want to be right out front and say, 'Folks, this is what went wrong and how it went wrong.' "

PS Thanks for the great link on the TV forum. I needed that seven years ago ;-).

Hi Rick, stonewalling can be very irratating. Here's an interview with Rather in the National Observer that's astonishing:

Dan Rather To Bush: ‘Answer The Questions’ (http://nyobserver.com/pages/frontpage1.asp)

While he stonewalls about the forged documents he's demanding that Bush answer the allegations raised in them.

Remember the flap over the Drudge report about Kerry's alleged affair with a campaign worker? Why doesn't Kerry answer the questions about her? Before the ABB crowd starts whooping it up, I don't think Kerry needs to answer any questions about it just as I don't think Bush needs to answer allegations raised in phoney documents. I've got a document that states you kick your dog every night, it's time for you to provide answers to these allegations as to why you're being so cruel to your dog /images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Rather would have been very comfortable in the politburo of the former Soviet Union.

Hey Rick, Long time ..... I still remember your, "Chips, Chips", line from the Caro Video. Hope all is well on the West Coast. The East Coast is just fine. If you are ever in the PA, NJ area, I'll buy you a drink. They have some great Barolos (get it?) at Ombre in the Borgata in AC. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi Ratso!

I remember that video. I'm probably one of the only marginally employed people in Los Angeles who has been in a video and doesn't call himself an "actor" /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Don't get to travel much because of personal obligations so the Barolos will have to wait. BTW I Googled Barolos, it is a wine right? If it is something cool then I probably don't know about it e.g., I was the last person on the planet who knew the meaning of the term "bling bling" /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

The forum is quite overwhelming these days as us old timers get lost among the 4000 plus posts per day. Hope all is going well for you in AC.

Edward R. Murrow is rolling over in his grave right now.

On 60 Minutes last night, Rather also said something to the effect of "people may be questioning the authenticity of the letter, but no one is questioning that Bush received preferential treatment". Nice Dan, I didn't know journalism included shifting the burden of proof onto the accused, even if your facts turn out to be wrong.

As a journalism major in college, I feel pretty strongly about this issue, and it's part of the reason I got out of the news business. These days the pressure to break an "exclusive" story means get it on the air first, confirm your sources second. It's a joke.

Definition: Diamonds or high-sparkle jewelry. Hip-hoppers have coined countless ways of naming "a girl's best friend" and they've become totally trendy household phrases.

In context I've always heard of bling-bling associated with diamonds. The Patriots most recent Superbowl rings are a good example of bling-bling.

I disagree. It is not only quite believable it is to be expected. Less than 2 months remain until Election Day and the shrillness and shrieking madness will continue unabated. I expect it to ratchet up a few more notches before the final climactic orgasm of the throbbing masses to go rushing to the polls, cold sober, and voting for the gangster of their choice.

Glad to hear all is well out there. Spent some in San Diego a few months back...very nice place. I suspect you are in LA.

About the Barolo...with a little literary license (spelling) you might see my warped humor. As the Barolo wine is one of the premire reds of Italy. From Wine Spectator, "The great grape of Northern Italy, which excels there in Barolo and Barbaresco, strong, ageable wines. Mainly unsuccessful elsewhere, <font color="red"> Nebbiolo </font> also now has a small foothold in California."
The reference to Ombre is a new Italian restaurant in the Borgata Casino in AC.

Cheers.

I did a search and noted John hasn't posted for two weeks. I just emailed him to see if everything is OK. I'll let you know given once you get our age stuff happens /images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Yeah, I'm just across the border in Orange County (in fact I live on the county line).

I'm not a big wine drinker but have tried the Nebbiolo wine out of curiosity. Seems OK but what do I know. Anyway, my ancestors couldn't have been related to those rich grape growers, they came over on the boat broke like so many others early in the last century ;-).
