I guess my question here is- the way I played it OR be prepared to check-call turn and river. I quickly weighed this vs chance of giving a freebie to singleton /images/graemlins/spade.gif and bet out.

You bet the flop, no one puts you on the straight. I would 3-bet if my opponent was aggressive.
