Was on a cruise recently and someone took it on themselves to organize a small NL Holdem Tournament. The cruise line did not organize the tourney, it was just an individual person who set the whole thing up. Cruise had something like 3000 guests and about 10 turned out for the tourney for a $100 buy-in. I didn't play (there were too many other things to do onboard rather than play cards with 10 people for 5 or 6 hours). Don't know if the organizer was a 2+2er or not. There wasn't any poker in the on-board casino or at any of our stops that I knew about.

Not only did the organizer take a cut of the buy-ins, he also chopped 1st and 2nd place with another player. It's nice being the house and finishing in the money!

What did he do to get it organized? Word of mouth? Did he involve the cruise director?

I am curious because I might be taking a cruise soon with some non-poker-playing friends and I'd love to get involved in something like that.

I'm pretty sure it was Rolf Slotboom.

He made a bunch of little notices that he copied on small pieces of paper that had 1 sentence, something like: $100 buy-in NL Texas Holdem Tournament, Rebuys, etc. Time, Place. It was 1 line long. He put these on all the cabin doors he could find (including mine). He brought his chip set and ran the whole thing, as far as I can tell. Don't know if the cruise folks were involved at all. Or if they cared, since this would have taken folks away from all the revenue generating activities on the ship. Don't know if the cruise line got a cut.

I don't think it is the poster you mention, since he would have had to post messages while we were at sea (which is possible, but he'd have to be a real addict to be surfing 2+2 when he could be, like, watching a show, eating, sailing, snorkeling, sitting by the pool, sipping a cool drink, you get the idea...).

I wish it was me. But I´m not smart enough for these kinds of things. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
