View Full Version : Is Paul Phillips Gay?

Something about this guy just strikes me as [censored]. It mainly hit me when I was reading that pokerbabe's website with the little bio's on all the WPT players. I came to his and there were a couple pictures of him, and I realized this man just looks gay.

I just read another poster saying Phillips seems gay to them. Now we joke around about Negreanu, but I think we know he's not actually gay.

Paul Phillips though, is he gay? Who else thinks he is gay.

I think you should ask Kathleen.

I suppose most people think that everyone with an IQ over 140 who dresses well is gay.

This has to be the gayest thread in the past week.

Doing some belated research into the subject matter, I came across a bunch of his wedding photos. Since it's obviously so easy to Google for this sort of thing I won't feel like I'm betraying his privacy by posting this link to a picture of Juan Juanda at his wedding.

John Juanda (http://www.improving.org/albums/photobooth/03_DVD01_125.jpg)

I think that just about settles the argument.

Most of my friends (http://www.livejournal.com/users/extempore/2002/08/11/) not to mention the occasional total stranger (http://www.improving.org/paulp/life/dec-2003.txt). Relevant part of the latter link:

Perhaps the highlight was an incident in a club with my best man Charlie.
We had arranged for a private table in the Vegas club "Ice", but there
were a few unknown women in our area thanks to the girl-seeking skills of
some of our compatriots. Charlie and I were having a heartfelt conversation,
during which I noticed one of the drunk girls obviously eavesdropping.
I didn't particularly mind, though I wondered what was keeping her so
enthralled. Her facial expressions betrayed total fascination, yet the
content of our dialogue surely didn't warrant that.

Finally she interrupted us. I expected this to be some innocuous query,
but no. She began to make a fervent, rambling plea that I not go through
with the intended marriage, because I was about to RUIN THE LIFE of some
poor woman. Kathleen's, presumably. Somewhat taken aback, I tried to
comprehend what she was saying and realized that she had concluded that
Charlie and I were gay lovers. I think she "deduced" this because of an
analogy I made between woman-man relationships and man-man relationships,
and fifteen minutes of subsequent eavesdropping apparently provided her
with no convincing evidence to contradict her initial hypothesis.

Charlie and I both sort of stared at her. I told her I'd take her good
advice under advisement, and that perhaps she should leave now. Charlie
was, appropriately, quite a bit less diplomatic. She eventually had to
be dragged off by one of her friends, still offering admonishments to me
for concealing my homosexuality and for deceiving my poor fiancee, who she
pitied for being so completely taken in by my pretense at heterosexuality.

You can't make this stuff up.

A gay pirate? That actually makes sense if you think about it.

Why can't you play in the WSOP?

It was meant to be a joke precisely because of this. The unintentional level is that people apparently also think that John Juanda is gay. I honestly did not know this before last night.

Apparently I better keep myself more up to speed on who everyone thinks is gay.

Happily Paul finds the situation amusing as well.

As I understand it, Paul was in a war with the Binion management (Becky Binion, I believe) over something he said to the media while playing in the WSOP several years ago. Now that the casino is controlled by non-Binions, Paul can go back (and did go back) this year.

I know I am missing a lot of details, but my memory sucks. Maybe Paul (or someone else) will fill in the missing parts. You also may be able to locate the full story on his journal or on RGP.

He is just seems really nervous and submissive off the poker table which may be what you are seeing. I saw him during the WHUPC and this is probably what strikes you as gay about him.

You take this [censored] a lot better than most would dude. So far the few posts here I have read by you have been intelligent and funny. Hopefully you will post more even with tards like frost around. Surely the few stellar tards we have here don't compare to the drones of lemmings at RGP?

For starters who gives a [censored], you that much of a homophobe you need to start a topic on this? The mans loaded with money, married and dresses well. Sounds like Jerry Seinfeld to me, is he gay? This is one stupid ass post.

Maybe it's because Paul is secure enough in his manhood that he doesn't care one way or another if people think he's gay.

Like Paul, I'm a straight guy who likes to dress well and have been mistaken for gay on more than occassion. I find it amusing and not in the least bit threatening or a blow to my masculinity.

In fact, there's been more than a few times when I've gotten a beautiful woman interested in me initially because of the ambiguity.

It's always the frat boy/jock types who didn't know how to process that "almost gay" experience they had when they were snapping towels in the locker room or having sex in the same room with a buddy who are constantly worrying about other's sexuality.

Don't worry, Dudes. You aren't gay.

Or maybe you are.

But either way? I couldn't give a rat's ass.

You know, I find this totally fascinating. I can't see someone else's sexual orientation being of the least bit of interest, unless of course you wanna bump uglies with the person in question. Then, it's entirely relevant.

So, I see a bunch of guys, slinging the word "gay" around like it's an insult, yet seem completely obsessed with who is gay. Not who isn't gay, just who is.

Are these people perhaps looking for an ugly-bumpage partner or two?

Well, good for you, but I don't really see how it's relevant to poker, tournaments, or televised tournaments.

You start laughing because it's ridiculous and irrelevent. You keep on laughing because of the little silly tangents that you find (The Dread-Pirate Juanda, for example) that are just humorous in the context.

You finally laugh hardest of all when you realize that some of the people in the thread actually -do- care one way or the other.

You haven’t been in radio for 20 years by any chance, have you?

Not laughing.

Just gratuitously poking a finger in their eyes.

Because I really, honestly don't care, but they obviously do.

If there's any laughing on my part, it's laughing at the hypocrisy.

They trespassed him (an honor often given to Card Counters), so he wasn't supposed to be able to go back. I saw him at the Horseshoe during BARGE this year, so obviously that restriction has been lifted (or he just didn't care...).

I was the poster who views/ed Paul Phillips as gay, but this is mainly stemming from a joke w/ friends.

Negreanu has a fiance, has written about the women in his life in numerous cardplayer articles, and is not gay. Paul Phillips... Well, he strikes me as gay. I think it was the red hair in the Plaza event. But hey!

I never expressed interest as to whether there was truth to my wonderment of whether Paul Phillips is or is not gay. Do I honestly care if he is gay? No, I dont, however, the original reason I stated it is someone had a "best of..." and minority categories. I filled in Paul's name for the "best gay player," because:
a. I find him to be a very good player
b. I dont "know" of any reputed player to be gay, so I linked a player who has homosexual tendencies with the question in mind.

After reading all these threads from seemingly over-charged 2+2 posters defending Paul's heterosexuality, ok, you convinced me, he's not gay, but I still find his hair color amusing, which is what led me to make the assumption he is gay.

And no, not everyone with dyed hair is gay, but also the particular day I saw the episode, he had a peculiar way of flinging chips in the middle, it was so flamboyant... Anyways, I just found it funny, take my explanation with a grain of salt, and of course, I will refrain from tarnishing his straight image anymore.

Varkonyi expresses more homosexual tendencies than paul phillips ever has. The guy dresses in nice suits and isn't a tumbling dickweed and that makes him gay?

I could understand if the dude had a lisp and was flailing his arms about whenever he won a pot, but the only thing he has in common with the stereotypical gay dude is good fashion sense.
