View Full Version : Phil Ivey at the Bellagio

I just got back from my weekend in Vegas to celebrate my 21st birthday, and I have a quick story to share. Maybe I'll write an entire trip report eventually, but there's very little poker involved so I might not.

On Thursday night, which was my birthday, my friends and I were getting drunk at the Bellagio sports book. We were sitting there betting $2 on horse races and getting free drinks. The Bellagio has by far the best race and sports book I saw.

Anyways, the poker room is right next to the sports book, so naturally I snuck a few peeks to see what was going on in the big game. Turns out Phil Ivey was playing heads-up against a middle aged guy with glasses who I didn't recognize. I can only imagine it was a bad idea for him to be in that game.

My friends and I were pretty drunk by this time, and one of them stumbled into the restroom, which brought a laugh from some guy in there. They started talking, and it turned out that the guy was friends with Ivey. So my friend got the bright idea of asking the guy if Phil Ivey would take a picture with me for my birthday.

I guess it was no problem, and the next thing I know, I'm headed up to the platform where the high limit games are, and Phil stands up in the middle of a pot and shakes my hand. I look in front of his stacks of chips and there's a haphazard pile of $500 and $1000 chips that he hasn't bothered to stack yet. The guy working there told me they were playing $1k/$2k. Just as he's posing for the picture, he turns to the guy he's playing against and says, "Did you call?" The guy says, "I haven't acted yet," and Phil shrugs like he could care less anyways. The other guy seems annoyed that I'm there. I would be too.

So I got the picture, apologised for taking up his time and left. I checked out the picture on the digital camera, and sure enough, Phil has the same exact expression on his face that he always has. I'm of course smiling like an idiot, but he looks like he's indifferent to anything that is happening around him.

Not really that great of a story, but I'm pretty happy about the picture. One of those random events that only come about when you're drunk. The rest of the weekend was a blast by the way, except that I sucked when I did play poker for a few hours. Oh well.

Considering this was your 21st B-day and you were in vegas there are entirely too many horses and not enough naked women in your story. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Happy B-day

I'll write up a trip report in a couple days. Today and tomorrow I'm travelling to LA to see a friend, and then to northern California to see my family for a while. When's your trip?

Hi Justin,

Although Ivey gives a real stoic impression all the time, it's nice to hear that he would stop his game to take a picture with a fan. This shows class.

Happy Birthday!

I saw your quote and wondered "who said that wasn't a great story?" Then I realized Justin himself said it near the end. Don't sell yourself short Justin!

I thought it was a great story too. Ivey's a cool guy. Post the pic when you get it if you could.

Ivey seems nice. I see him at the Hustler occasionaly. Anyways, last weekend my dealer said best guys to deal to are "Negreanu-who he said is the nicest high limit player he's ever ran into in his life and has been dealing for years." And he said Ivey "is the funniest person at the table and a real crackup"
