Anyone know about voicemail systems?

The owner of the burgeoning company I work for asked me to get some quotes for voice mail systems. I don't know anything about voice mail. I'm about to hit the phonebook - I just tried looking up vendors online and they all look shady. Any knowledge would be helpful.

Our company uses Audix. Very large company with about 300 offices across the country. I dont know crapola about them, but we are pretty real deal so it cant be too bad.

voice mail system or complete phone system?

We have a 4-line phone system with no frills. We'd like the ability to have 5-10 voice mailboxes to pick up when no one answers the phone. Also, the ability to put someone on hold and to transfer them to the voice mail system would be a plus. Does this entail an entire phone system?
